Default DTV Full Protection Plan (Do you use it?)

I only use 2 receivers, one is the RCA Tivo 40, the other is the H20.

I'm considering the full protection plan that covers everything.

I was informed by customer retention that the full service plan price on the HD receivers has just been reduced from $7.99 to $5.99. This one fee covers all receivers regardless of how many you may have.

I would assume that if you are a new customer and are under the lease plan the full protection plan would be less attractive.

Since the equipment is leased, it would seem that if it malfunctioned they would replace it.

Any thoughts?

I think there's more to it than that. (And it's a shame cause I have it.) It covers the remote and I think adjustments with the dish. You might want to call them to find out. (Then let me know hehe)

I don't follow what you're saying.

I already know what is covered, it's explained in detail in the H20 owners manual on page 83.

I just wanted to know if any others are using the plan and what is their opinion from past experience, or if anyone had a problem with equipment when the plan was beneficial to have?

Yes, I have the protection plan. I've had a receiver, a remote and a multiswitch replaced. I think I'm a few years up on D* with the plan.

When I lived in San Franisco about 5 years ago, my D* went out and i had to schedule a service call. It was going to cost about $50 so the rep just gave me a year of the service plan and included the service call in the plan. It was a great setup as I would've paid one way or the other but this way, I got a whole year instead of just one call. Not sure if they do it like that anymore though....might be worth asking.

I have never had it or needed it (7 years). I live dangerously I guess.

with the new lease program D* covers all STB's but the protection plan for 5.99 is needed to cover replacing the remote or work on the dish. kinda odd where the remote is leased with the box but it is tough to understand d* sometimes.

Can anyone confirm this, if you go to lease, do you still have to pay for the protection plan in order to get dish and wiring covered? That is really an issue since I have replaced 3 LNB units due to indirect lightning strikes in less than 5 years.

One of the other D* insiders here said the same thing a little while back. Dish, wiring, and remotes require an addtional $5.99 per month for protection (If you are leasing). If you own your equipment and you are paying the $7.99 per month, I believe you are already covered.

I have used both services since 1996, and never bought the protection plan. The worst thing that ever happened was the battery cover breaking. Big deal. If the dish moves, I reallign it. Knock on wood, I never have had a problem with my boxes, including my HDTIVO unit. 60.00 a year, and I bet that you would never use it.

Default Went to Protection Plan after 10 years

Our experience has been that the with less complex, easier to align systems of 10 years ago, going without the protection plan was feasible. Since February, 2005, we've had HD service, first with the 3 LNB and now the 5 LNB. We have required so many service calls, most for dish realignment, it seemed wise to just pay for all the service calls up front! We also had an H-20 go south about 2 months after it went into service. We were just on the borderline with it's warranty. Replacement would have been $199 at the time.

Once our "commitment" is up, I will resurvey the whole TV, internet, phone service market and probably dump DirecTV.
