The new HD DVR's will start on the west coast, San Francisco and L.A then they will move east at a very slow pass. This was announced a couple of months ago.

This is a good thing, by the time it gets to the eastern time zone, we will know about any bugs and have an idea what it is all about.

I was in a Best Buy store today and was looking at the Directv HD receiver and the Directv HD DVR. I noticed on the non DVR receiver box was "Mpeg-4 capable" while the DVR model made no mention of that.

So, my question is, I'm trying to decide if I want to get Comcast HD or Directv HD but if I buy the Directv HD-DVR now, what do I do when MPEG-4 becomes available here in Miami, Fla ???

thanks,

Fred

When the new HD-dvr HR20 becomes available you have the option to call and get the upgrade when it is available.

Yes, but the million dollar question is: How much will that upgrade cost?

It's supposed to be free since the current DVRs can NOT receive the new MPEG-4 making it useless and a waste of money. D* knows people will be very unhappy with a 600 box they can't use, so they'll exchange them.

That's what they told me in the fall. By the end of the year, there was the press release that the PST and MST time zones would get it for free, but everyone else would have to wait or pay $99. By spring, I called a retention CSR who would not commit to any price at all.

Prices and swapping has yet to be determined. Just remember Dtv is switching to leasing all new equip starting March 1st with the option to buy out. Today I will be having a meeting going over the leasing program and pricing as soon as I know more I will make a good post regarding the lease program, and on the topics the new HR20 was on the list.

Talking New HD-dvr HR20

DIRECTV Plus HR20 HD DVR
Wednesday, January 11 2006

DIRECTV Plus HR20 HD DVR

The DIRECTV(R) Plus HD DVR (HR20) combines the best entertainment with unprecedented control and convenience to create the ultimate TV viewing experience. It brings together the new DIRECTV Plus DVR and DIRECTV HD Receiver. Viewers are able to record one HD program while watching another and record two different shows at the same time, while watching a pre-recorded program. The DIRECTV Plus HD DVR gives the user the ability to pause and rewind live HD TV for up to 90 minutes, use instant replay and watch playback in slow motion. The DIRECTV Plus HD DVR is able to record more than 30 hours of DIRECTV HD programming delivered in MPEG-2, or up to 50 hours of DIRECTV HD programming delivered in MPEG-4, or up to 200 hours of standard-definition programming. In addition, the DIRECTV Plus HD DVR is MPEG-4 compatible, and is the first DIRECTV HD receiver with interactive capabilities.

I managed to take a picture of the rear of the unit, showing HDMI, component, s-video and composite connections, but I was informed by the DIRECTV rep that the unit being displayed was not the finished model.

DIRECTV plans to launch the DIRECTV Plus HD DVR at retail mid-2006. Initial pricing is sketchy but expect to see the lease option begin around $250 with a service contract.
