Default Dolby Digital 5.1

New to the forum so I apologize if I am repeating an old topic. I have an HR10-250 HD DVR. I am very fortunate that since I am about 30 miles from both Balt and DC, I am a textbook sales case for digital TV. I get ALL of the Balt and DC digital channels (all networks are available in both cities) perfect with an in attic antenna. Needless to say, I am thrilled that my DVR integrates the satellite and off-air.

My issue is with Dolby Digital 5.1. On my sdef Tivo I used to get (and record) some DirecTV programming in 5.1. Recently I have not seen any. I have had HD for about 6 months and have not seen one program on DirecTV that is actually listed in the programming info as 5.1. Consequently, I am not even sure if my HD DVR properly decodes it. Much of the prime time network (off air) programming advertises as being in 5.1. But again, I have yet to see any of it appear on my AV receiver. This equipment was all purchased at the same time so I am concerned that I may have an issue with the HD DVR, my Yamaha receiver, or even a setting. I have 5.1 enabled on the DVR. It is set to auto sense on the AV receiver.

So... my question to everyone is, do you know for sure if any broadcast programming on a Balt/Wash channel, or regular programming on DirecTV is currently broadcast with the 5.1 track?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Also, ljnelson, your OTA locals may NOT be broadcasting 5.1 even though the network is advertising it. Many times a 5.1 reminder will be emblazoned on the screen but your local affiliate is too cheap to send the technology on to you.

Besides the properly working scnenario where the AV receiver automatically senses the availability of a DTS signal, how can you tell that the DirecTV broadcast includes 5.1? They used to provided it in the "info". (Although occasionally it would say it was there and it really was not). I have not seen that lately. On my HD DVR, when I press info, there are options along the right to switch tuners, choose alternate audio track (the dolby emblem), etc. If I select the alternate audio track button, it ALWAYS shows, "This program does not have alternate audio tracks." "Play the standard audio" is the only option available.

What am I missing?

Kirk, thanks for the link! It shows that more than half of the Baltimore and Washington stations are broadcasting in DD 5.1. Yet, my receiver never seems to decode it. I am obviously missing something. For the sake of troubleshooting, the question is, should I have some indication (real time) that the HD DVR sees the signal?

Thanks again for everyone's help and patience in this matter.

I feel stupid. Although I still do not understand why I get no indication on the DVR that there is a DD5.1 signal it turns out that the problem has been me the whole time. As I mentioned, this was an all new equipment set-up so I had multiple opportunities for error! My Yamaha receiver has addressable DTS inputs. I had the DTV input set to the wrong port! What an idiot....

If it is any consolation, I still would not be in business if it were not for your responses. I would not have gone back and checked my connections. BTW, the link Kirk replied shows that both Balt and Wash NBC is not in 5.1. What is that about???? I am hoping that one of them has upgraded since that list was created. We will see later tonight.

Thanx,

Lee

On a related topic, my local ABC station (Lexington, KY), is actually sending out a 5.0 signal.......in other words, my sound system indicates a 3.0/2.0 instead of a 3.0/2.1 signal...........any ideas why that is? I know it is not my home theatre system, because my Fox local is 5.1 and my system indicates as such.............Any ideas as to how this happens?

BCS Bowls on ABC have been quite good in HD.......but it seems that the sound leaves every once in a while.
