I've read on this site before that Directv is simply out of space on their satellites (not a technical guru on this, other people here know more than I). The outlook seems sluggish at best for more HD programming.
I'd hope that that Directv is intuitive enough to get on the ball ASAP. Sports fans like me will not put up with this crap much longer (ie not broadcasting TNT in HD during the Western Conference Finals, big no-no!). Once the Fox Sports digital networks become more widespread, the pressure will be put on Directv to expand. The've worked for years to try to recruit the cable tv subscribers; I hope they're not stupid enough to loose them by not keeping up with the HD world. |

Supposedly DirecTV is launching a new satellite system in July that will allow them to expand their HD offerings and for the first time provide two-way broadband Internet service.

Actually Directv already has broadband internet service now on two different satellites with their DirecWAY service. I have installed two of them and they are a pain. You loose service everytime it rains.

BTW, I'm hoping I didn't goof up going for the Directv Toshiba HD receiver- my OTA digital HD stations are all less than 5 miles from my house- I'll give everyone a full post install report. |

I had 2 way satellite internet Direcway for a year until I got DSL in my area. They don't deliver on their promises of speed. Just read their "fair access" policy. I would get about 200-250 megs into a download and they would throttle me back to a slower speed. You have to wait a period of time to get back up to the faster download. What it comes down to is over a 24 hr period your average download speed will be about 56K!
As far as High Def goes we would all like to see everything in HD. When that will happen depends on the market. |

Here's the scoop on Direcway.
I have had several Direcway systems installed for clients in rural locations where there is no cable or DSL available. The earlier DW4000 system was not much better than dial up depending on the capabilities of your computer. The key marketing phrase for Direcway was "up to" as in "up to 500kbs" download speeds. To get that you need the traffic to be light on the satellite AND a very fast computer. The reason why the fast computer is needed for the DW4000 is the compression used by Direcway and the decompression that is required by the computer. With a P2 400mhz computer we could not get better than about 256kbps download. We ended up with a Pentium 4 at 1.8ghz only running the Direcway software and internet connection sharing as the internet server in order to get any speed out of the system. When we upgraded to the new DW6000 system, there was a big difference. With the new DW6000 the decompression is built into the modems and they point at a different bird that has better bandwidth apparently. It still is not as good as DSL, but it is much better than dialup and the issue of large downloads is still there as thorerik described, although they have upped the total download before going into the throttle mode somewhat from what it used to be. In summary, I would say if there is any way possible to get DSL or cable internet, that's the way to go. But I'd take the new DW6000 over dialup given those two choices. |
