I have the network stations (cbs, abc, nbc, fox) east coats and west coast channals. Is there anyway of receiving these same channels in HD format. I have the HDDVR but get the network stations in ST format.

Default Antenna

The only way you can get them is with an Over The Air(OTA) antenna. Your receiver has an antennna connection and has a HDTV tuner. You scan for OTA digital channels and add them to your guide.

Channels 80 through 89 are the HD feeds of the East and West coast network channels. If you pay for the HD package AND you already get the East and/or West coast feeds you get the HD feeds as well.

I guess I'll have to call D*. I pay for and receive both east and west coast stations. I don't however get channels 80-89

Do you subscribe to the HD package? If you do not then that explains why you don't get the HD channels.

Yes I do. I called D* twice and both reps said I need another waiver for HD network stations. They said it is because the HD network stations come from a different city than the standard stations do that I had a waiver for already. I don't believe I should have a problem getting accepted. I'm over 70miles from the standard station location and I couldn't receive them via antenna. The HD network stations are 120miles away.

This is the same question I've had for some time. Why doesn't DTV just tell us this? What are the conditions for having the waiver approved. I've been ready to upgrade for 18 months but haven't because nobody would assure me I would get ABC, NBC, Fox etc.

You can request the waiver before ordering the upgrade to HD. That is what I did. I decided a couple of days later to go ahead anyway because I think I can get the stations with an OTA antenna regardless.

I have a feeling DTV is simply the messenger when it comes to waivers and not part of the decision making or legal process. I would think it is in their best interest to have all of their customers get their channels through via satellite as opposed to with OTA antennas.

I live in CNY 70 miles from Syracuse NY where my "local" stations would come from. I can't pick those up via antenna. The HD network station approval has to come from Rochester, NY. That’s 120miles away. I'm over 4 1/2 hours away from NYC. So I basically can't get anything from an Antenna.
DTV said they would send a postcard to the Rochester stations to get approval. Could take up to 30-45 days.
So I guess its a wait and see now

Well just a little update here. The more I thought about this. The more I thought of how there reasoning made no sense to me. So I called DTV back and asked for a supervisor. I again explained my situation about already having a waiver for regional network stations. She looked my info and said I was correct and that I should be receiving HD network stations. She resent the info to my receivers. I'm at work now, so I'll find out if this worked when I get home.

Question

Are you talking about the New York and Los Angeles network feeds in SD??

It was my understanding if you currently (or are eligible to) receive both in sd you can take the option of receiving one of them in HD, in this case New York. You would lose the LA feed but it would be worth it in my book.

I live in rural SE Ohio and when I enter my zipcode on DirectTv's website to check for locals that is the information I get.

**UPDATE**

Dear Mr. Cramer,
Our letter is attached, which explains our position. We have received a press release from DirecTV that indicates that local HD will be available sometime in November 2005 (yep, this month!), so maybe DirecTV will be able to tell you an exact date.

The passage of the SHVERA legislation in 2004 eliminated the waiver exception for receiving a distant network channel when you can subscribe to local signals through your satellite provider, even though it's not the digital version. Legal counsel advises that waivers are precluded under the new legislation, since satellite subscribers have access to KTVU's analog signal via local-into-local service from the satellite providers. Regretfully, therefore, KTVU denies your waiver request.

KTVU invested millions of dollars to acquire the exclusive rights to broadcast Fox programming, both analog and digital, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company has also invested millions of dollars to develop high definition broadcast capability, delivered to our viewers over-the-air, at no subscription cost to the viewers, via relatively inexpensive antennas.

By limiting the distribution of out-of-market television signals, the law ensures the continuation of local programming, news, sports, weather, advertising and emergency public safety information upon which local viewers rely. The law also ensures that local public officials and businesses have the ability to reach local residents through television.

DirecTV has announced that they will be providing local HD signals in the second half of 2005. Of course, that takes into account a six-month time span, from July to December, so we do not have an exact date. Apart from the Comcast and Astound cable HD, an over-the-air antenna and "later this year", we don't have solutions to offer. We hope you'll keep watching KTVU, in analog and digital (when available), and we hope for quick turnaround on the new "birds" from DirecTV.

Sincerely,

Patricia A. Macholl
KTVU Research Director

Well, they told me why i was denied. But GOOD NEWS, HD LOCAL THIS MONTH!!

At least you got a polite letter from your local network. My CBS rep was a real tool, gave me an extremely rude letter about how I could not have a waiver and if I watched out of market programming I was in violation of the law. Haven't watched much CBS since.
