Default dish or direct?

I have been very happy with dish network for over two years. But out of contract customers are treated like red headed step children! This info re-assures me that I will get as good if not better tv from direct.

Question: I hate having to change service every 2 years. Yes I'm lazy. How is Direct TV at dealing with long term customers?

IMO they have been good to me, once I was out of contract I called them up and said "look times are tough and I have to make some tough choices and cut back but I have really enjoyed the service I have received from you in the past, perhaps there is something that could be done to keep me from having to terminate my service" and they hooked me up well - Overal bill lowered by $8 and$20 off a month for the first 6 mos and then $10 a month off for 6 after that, 3 mos of all the 'premium channels HBO,SHOW,Starz, etc. and several additional channels I wasn't getting before. Rep even told me "call back next year after the promo runs out and they would see what they could do again" . Seems to me that they think keepong a customer will cost them less in the long run than obtaining a replacement one.

You may find this interesting. I ordered from Direct first and Dish second. I decided to go with Dish mainly because the sales rep. was much more helpful than the one at Direct.

When I called back Direct to cancel my order, they offered me an additional $5.00 a mo. off for 24mo. So it would appear to me that Direct is alot more hungry for business than Dish.

I called in on m parents account for Directv, they gave $20 off the package for 6 months, $20 off the sunday ticket for 6 month, and free HD as well. They had been paying $150 a month for a while. Also added some referrals and now they are at $2 a month

As HiDefRev started to touch on, historically, if you are a sports fan you went with Direct, if you prefer movies you went with Dish. I don't know what he means though that Dish compresses their signal more? I have had everything for about 4 and a half years now and all channels are crystal clear. No artifacts or digitizing, nothing?

I currently have the 722K DVR box which has 4 tuners with the Over-The-Air module (sold separately for about $30 or less), so I can record 4 things at once and watch a recorded show at the same time. We have been mulling over the Hopper and Joey, but they have only been out about 2 weeks and are still buggy for a lot of people while Dish irons the software out. The Hopper only has 3 tuners, but one of them is devoted to recording ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX during primetime. All 4 networks all at once, but only during primetime (everyone is throwing a fit over that seemingly dumb decision).

We came within 4 days of switching to Direct last summer and I started digging into their practices. Dish had 12,000 complaints with the BBB and other agencies, Direct had 39,000. Then a lot of people started saying that they got cheated out of the deals they were promised (But Dish is a master of this also) and their bill was much higher than promised.

Whoever you decide to go with demand that you get everything in writing BEFORE the install. Be firm and tell them, no letter, no install, period. The CSR's will promise you the sun, moon and stars, then never enter it into the computer. When you call back to find out where your deal is, whoever looks it up will say, "Sorry, it doesn't say that anywhere here?" and you're stuck.

Although I sound like a Dish fanboy, I have come to like the little bells and whistles that Dish offers and Direct doesn't have. I can't think of anything specific at the moment, but I always read "reviews" when someone says they just switched from Dish to Direct, or vice versa, and here's their thoughts. They will say, "Dish has XYZ, but Direct doesn't." And I always remember those things being a deal breaker for me personally.

So take my thoughts with a grain of salt. Everything is so subjective, what I dislike about one company may be exactly what you like about them?

Good luck!
