Default DirecTV HR34 Cutting Edge (CE) discussion

"There have been some inquiries about the DirecTV HR34 HD GUI.
At this time, the only way to get it is to download a CE which is essentially a beta version of the software. These instructions will work for other receivers also, but most of them already have the HD GUI so not the same incentive to try the CE. This information is available on other sites, but this post is to assist Hi-Def users without having to go elsewhere.

ATTENTION HDF DISCLAIMER: (High Def Forum does not assume any liability for any problems with software)
Before considering it, understand that DirecTV does not support the beta, so if you have a problem you cannot contact them for help. You could possibly lose recordings and settings, so, consider the risks involved and what you can live with. You can revert back to the standard national software at any time, but that may not restore anything lost.

The CEs are generally available between 11:00PM and 1:30AM Friday and Saturday nights. This can change and we will try to post the actual times and CE version by Friday each week in this thread. Make sure you do it when you don't have anything important recording that you want to watch the rest of the night.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE CE SOFTWARE
:

With the remote: Menu> Parental,Favs,Setup> System Setup> Reset
It will ask you to press the Dash(-) key to confirm.
You can also use the red button on the access door on the receiver, but this is only recommended if the menu procedure fails.

The receiver will turn off and your TV will go black. When the receiver's lights come back on, you will need to key in the following code:
Press 0 2 4 6 8, but do it slowly and deliberately, like a second apart.

The screen will next show that download has started (If you get a screen that indicates the receiver is booting, and shows step 1 of 2, the download did not start and you will have to try again).

The download will take at least 10 minutes so don't do anything until it is done.

Just like with your initial setup and any reset, it takes a while for everything to rebuild. It's best to just let it rebuild and try everything out the next day.

If there is a problem with the software that you think DirecTV should know, you can send in a report, again using the menus: Menu> Parental, Fav's, Setup> Misc. Options> Report (you need to have ethernet, wireless, or powerline adapter to send to DTV).

To access additional features, you need to do a search code: Menu> Smart Search> (SEARCH CODE)> Red Button> All> Done

SEARCH CODE: IAMANEDGECUTTER

This code enables access to Misc Options menu (one of which is to send report)

SEARCH CODE: 30SKIP or 30SLIP
If you haven't already used this, the skip will do the 30 second ffw immediately and you won't see the frames changing, the slip takes it back to the default.

Hope you enjoy the new HD GUI. My experience so far has been completely positive, but I only have the HR34 and not a whole home system. The bugs I have heard of involve having additional receivers attached, but nothing seems to be real serious.

Let us know your experiences with it. "

hate to be a bubble burster: I think the new guide is completed and in all designated receivers.
also, I saw the site where you got this and tere are many many who have turned the STB into a brick, attempting a forced down load.
It's your STB do as you see fit. I sell boat anchors if you need one, but keep the STB clean

The reason the HR34 is specified is that the guide is not in this particular receiver yet - as stated. Mine is working perfectly as I stated and I enjoy the GUI much better than the old one. There are always going to be some problems with betas, and there are some that should never try them. Thus, the disclaimer and warnings.

As with many naysayers, I sense that you haven't even tried it, but are basing your opinion on isolated instances and conjecture. We'll see how the feedback goes from real life experiences.

Thumbs up Ce

Thanks, lsylvest. This will be a very useful addition to the HDForum, for sure. I have been a CE for quite some time, and enjoy the weekly "updates" that the CE program affords its users. I, for one, have never had a problem with any of the updates, and, in fact, don't personally know of anyone who has; though there is always the possibility that something could go wrong. Hence, the noted disclaimer.

As to which of the sites leevitalone visited and found his info, I'm not sure, as there is more than one site that supports the CE program, and perhaps their members are indeed experiencing more difficulties than normal.

Also, even though the new HDGUI has now been released nationally, it is updated with new technology each week for those in the CE program to evaluate for future implementation into the national firmware releases.

Keep up the good work. I look forward to future posts. .

It appears there is no CE download for the HR34 this week.

There seems to be some confusion about the discussion of the HD GUI for the HR34 because it has been installed on all (or at least almost all) of the other D* receivers, but the HR34 has not gone national yet. I did see some scuttlebut that the national HD GUI for the HR34 may be available in a couple of weeks.

So once I become a CE user, I then have to do software updates manually for as long as I'm on the CE program? Is there a way to verify that there is in fact an update available, or do you have to just do the reset > 0 2 4 6 8 thing and hope?

Thanks in advance!

We'll post in this thread each week what CE is available and the download times. There is none this week for the HR34. You can stop at any time and revert to the national software. The downloads are generally available from 11:00pm to 1:30pm EST friday and saturday nights.

There are CEs available for any receiver. I just limited this to the HR34 since the interest was in the HD GUI and it happens to be the receiver I am using. If there's enough interest we can list all available CEs.

I have a 34 and a 24, but I don't share between the two. Before I make the jump to CE on the 34, could you post the procedure to revert back to the NS, in case I had an issue?

Also, Will I lose any recordings or series options when I do the upgrade? Lastley, are the manual CE upgrades mandatory, or can I miss a couple of upgrades, and do it once per month, or will missing the exact series of upgrades cause an issue?

Thanks again for your help.

You know, the tech guys in El Segundo are still working some bugs out of the HR34. In a few months time, the new HD Guide will be downloaded to all HR 34s, and the device will be good to go.

Why would anyone want to force a Guide download now? Although in most cases there probably won't be an issue, in some cases there will be, and you won't find D* customer service very receptive to helping you.

Think hard before doing this.

To revert, do the same download procedure but do it at any time that the CE is not available.

You can skip upgrades - it won't affect anything. Just remember, though, each CE contains fixes as well as possibly new features.

The HD GUI should be a national software release shortly, so if you're reluctant it's not a long wait. If you're using it stand alone you're less susceptible to problems. They'll still keep issuing CE's that will contain new features even after the national is released and to test fixes, so there is some benefit down the road.

Your choice. I'm glad I did it because I like he interface and it's faster, but I've had it for a while.

Hope this answers your questions. I won't be able to reply again for a while as I'm on the road.

None for the HR34, just the H2, HR2 series units.

Sorry I'm late. On the road and also got distracted by March-Madness.

Correction: just saw some late news that there is a CE for the HR34. Download times tonight and Saturday at 11:00PM to 1:30AM EST. Should be available right now.

I went ahead and downloaded the CE, and so far so good. I had to do 5 resets of my HR34 with the NS software and it started to frustrate me, so I figured what the heck, and made the switch. The download went as expected with no issues with settings, recordings or series manager list.

On the NS, the UI was slow to respond, especially guide, sometimes taking up to 6 seconds to display after pushing the button. No such issue with the CE. It is quick to respond after a button is pushed. I will monitor video/audio for drop outs and other issues, and I'll report back if anything pops up.

I do have a question though. Now that I'm on CE, do I have to worry about the 34 doing an auto update and reverting back to the NS? Do I have to disable or change a setting to prevent this? Or, now that I'm on CE, are all updates initiated by me, and only me?

Is there a web site where I can monitor the CE releases in case you get busy and can't update this thread? I'm assuming that I only want to look for an update whenever there is one available, and usually only on Friday/Saturday nights?

Thanks for all of your help, it is much appreciated!!!

You should get any national update, but remember, that update is the completed CE cycle that has been considered stable and is essentially what you already have. From there, you can continue to do the CEs to get any new features before they are released.

Glad everything went well. It appears the new GUI is about ready for a national update so it's unlikely you will have any serious problems. Anyone that hasn't had the new GUI with another receiver should be quite pleased.
