That is exactly what I did...kept it for a year and then canceled. Got a new receiver and paid a promotional price per month of 99¢.

I had D* for 2 years, then Dish for 3 1/2 years without their protection plans. In that time I never had to call support for anything and never had an equipment problem. I only have one DVR an easy hookup to the dish which is on a 4' pole beside the house and a piece of cake to align. In that 5 1/2 years I saved almost $400 and don't feel I was taking any kind of risk. If the DVR fails, I have a FedEx account that's cheaper than their $20 and remotes are cheap (they're all over eBay). If you don't abuse things and refrain from stupidity like putting the stbs in enclosed cabinets with no room to breathe (these things run hotter than my pcs), then the risk is minimal if almost non-existent.

Final note: there's a reason they push these plans, just like extended warranties - they are huge moneymakers.

It's saved me a lot of money in the last 1 1/2 years. My dish has only needed aligned twice. I did that myself.

I had an issue with the picture breaking up off and on. When I called the rep. I was told my PP would not cover it unless it happened all the time.

I have the plan. I'm not sure it is worth it though. In 18 months they have sent me 2 remotes. Everything else works just fine.

I originally bought the PP because I live in a windy area. Over the years I have used it for a couple of dish alignments, all new cables from the dish into the house because the tech noticed mine had been installed with the wrong connectors and improper grounds, A new DVR delivered to my house instead of being shipped, and a new remote.

I usually consider extended warranties and service contracts as less than cost effective but this PP has been worth while for me.

It's a roll of the dice, Bob. I have saved well over $500 during the last three years because I had the protection plan.
