I have a HR22-100 DVR that I got about 3 years ago and I assume this model was available before I got it. It seems very slow to respond to remote control inputs.
My brother signed up with DTV earlier in the year and he has a newer model (don't know what the model is). It seems much faster to respond to inputs. Almost instantaneous where as mine is (1000 1, 1000 2, 1000 3, 1000 4 and then the remote request happens. I'm coming up on a year past my 2 year commitment and wondering what my options are to get one of these newer receivers short of threatening to take my business to Dish, etc? further edit... I just called D and go a replacement HR24. It will be shipped directly to me for self installation. Total cost $21.25 plus another 2 year commitment. I wasn't going anywhere anyway. Better than paying $200 for the same deal with the same commitment. I did get the song and dance that I "may" receive an earlier model and I am supposed to be able to refuse it if that happens. So, I will be pissed if they send me a HR22, but from what I was told, that would be unlikely.

Nothing is stopping you from getting new ones now.
The NEW on is HR34 which can record 5 shows at time (Now in some areas) should be nation wide by first part of '12. Hr24 can be purchased from ebay (with care taken) to get the IRD # and check it with D* to sure it is a Valid Receiver that can activated on your account. HR24's can be Orded from Soild singal or any retailer that offers them. Those units will be leased and will add a 2 yr commit when activated. You can find "OWNED" units on ebay or craigslist -Before you buy it check the IRD# with D* to be sure it is a OWNED unit and it can added to your account as owned. A owned unit will NOT add to a commitment. But it really doesn't matter if you spend a $169 to $299 for a Recever that can only be used for D* Service -why would you be worried about leaving in 2 yrs any way. You can call D* and say cancel -and ask what they will give you to stay-but it won't be new equipment for a existing customer. When you call in for a replacement they can not tell what you'll be sent -but it will be a receiver that can work with D*. Are you happy with the service? Then just order what you want and swap it out . I have two Hr22's running the new software and it has improved the speed. The New Gui is rolling out so just wait and see if your HR22's may be just fine. Or when all else fails--Leave and try your luck with another provider.

Wow, that's a lot of input on the upgrade matter. The HR34 sounds interesting, but I would NEVER have a reason to record 5 shows at one time. However, every once in a while, I do want to watch something and both recorders are going, giving me the option to stop one recording or forget about watching something live while the 2 recorders are "cooking".
As I said in my post above, I don't care about the 2 year commitment as I'm not going anywhere. I DO want the speed of the HR24 menu selection. If D sends me another HR22, it heading back to their warehouse immediately. As far as I know, I have the latest software on my HR22. Lurking in the back of my mind, I'm wondering if the cause of the slowness on my HR22 is partly my fault. I keep it and other electronic receives in a closed cabinet. I would be the first to admit that it is NOT the coolest place in my home. I'm wondering if the HR22 is slowing down in the heat environment. I would guess the temperature is in the high 80's to 90's in the cabinet.

There is a software update currently being pushed out. It's just a maintenance update (nothing to do with the HD GUI)

Well, I didn't and I'm slightly pissed although the DTV representative I spoke with said they couldn't guarantee I would get an HR24. It arrived today and the outside of the package says it's a reconditioned HR21.
It's going back immediately and if I decide to pursue the matter, I'll just buy (lease) a new HR24.

When you get the HR24 what did DIRECTV tell you to do with the HR22. I know most of the time they send you out a box to return the old unit, but what DID they say to do this time?

I'll let you know when I pull the plug and buy(lease) the HR24. I've been told that if they don't want the HR22 back, it's mine to keep. I'm not holding my breath on that one though if they're still sending out refirb HR21 models like the one they sent me.

I sent the HR21 back the same day I got it. Didn't even open the box as it said it was a HR21 on the outside of the box.

What programming can't you get with the HR21 that makes it outdated?
