Default Hookup problems with HR10-250

I have my HR10-250 hooked up to my tv using the hdmi connection. When I try to hookup my sony dvd recorder using the audio/video connections in the back of my HR10-250 going to my( line in )on my audio/video on my dvd recorder I only get sound and no video. How do you hook up a video recorder (dvd or vcr) to your HR10-250?

It may be that the line inputs will work with the component outputs only.

thats the only way I have been able to hook my recorder up to the hr10-250 to dump programs to archive to dvd....seems the component and all other connections are disabled when hdmi is hooked up.

I am still learning to use this tivo but, if I am not mistaken, I also had to change the resolution to 480 to get any type of picture. I have only had to do one "dump" so far but, the HD is almost full again so I will be doing it again shortly.

If I find another/better way, I will be sure to post the results.

I record tivo on my computer over s-vid. i also need to output 480i to get any video. i'm running component to my hd set and svid to my computer for now. try switching output formats and see if that helps.

That is correct.....the only way you can see video from a DVD recorder is to change to 480i on your DVR........

That is what I thought, the HDMI cable being connected will prevent the SD outputs, so use of the component cables is necessary if you want to leave everything hooked up. I didn't say that very clearly before, sorry.

I've been trying to figure out how to get my HD TIVO content to my computer. I have a dvd player/recorder in my tower and don't want to spend the money on a stand alone dvd recorder. Can you explain your connections? Is there an S-video to USB cable that your run? Please help. This would be awesome if I could do this.

The only way to pass HD video from your HD Tivo to your PC is with Firewire, if it will permit copying. Some content will refuse to be copied.

There is no SVideo to USB cable... they are completely different signals. You could digitize an SVideo signal, if you have hardware that supports that, but it will be limited to 480i - the only type of signal SVideo can carry.

DVD recorders can not record HD signals, although a PC can write data files almost no player will play them.

Sorry, should have specified about the video. I don't need HD, 480i is fine. How does one record from TIVO to the computer?

Thanks

I have an old radeo all in wonder 7500 with audio/video in. i run all of the video sources that i want to record from into a switcher and then into the input cord. i use the computer just like a digital vcr. play the content i want recorded from it's source, and capture it on the computer. don't really do it often, mostly for my wife who's an elementary teacher. spiderweber, you just need a vid card with a/v input. they make external vid capture devices as well. unfortunately there is no drag and drop method to do this from the hd direct tivo.

You have to have a video card which has audio/video inputs to allow you to capture the signals.

Like the above poster, I too have an ATI board, but mine is an 8500.

It has jacks to capture S-Video, Firewire, component, etc.

So can I play to an external A/V capture device from my tivo like i would for a vcr, and then hook that up to my computer? Sorry for sounding elementary about all this but I haven't done much with transfering data to my computer.
Thanks

The Tivo doesn't know or care if you are outputting the signal to a vcr or to a video capture card/device.

However, the resolution will be 4x3, SD, 480i, not HD

Pretty good thread going here and as always, wonderful advice.

I guess this makes perfect common sense but, what I have found that even though any HD content being dubbed over to a dvd recorder will be 480i and will show up as 4x3 letterbox, is that HD content looks MUCH MUCH better after the transfer than SD programs

I suppose the logic is that the HD is a superior picture in the first place and since that is going IN..whats coming out is going to look better than just a SD being dubbed the same way.

It is far from being HD but, its better than anything SD being dubbed the same way.

I know...NEWSFLASH right?

Bottom line, I will archive things from hd to the recorder to dvd and be happy to have them. Where as I do not even bother archiving anything SD UNLESS I get it from my SD tv with the SD tivo.
