Default Direct TV starting to get really expensive..Trying to find ways to lower bill

Just saw the bill for the month and $155.14 is alot of money for TV service and was wondering if there was any way to cut back..but there are some problems. We watch HBO series shows, showtime shows and since the Choice Ultimate package doesn't come with them we have 0 choice but to get the Premier package. With 4 receivers (1 HD, 3 SD) I already know the lease fee is a good chunk of money. Are those movie channels really the reason why our bill is 45-50 dollars more than the choice ultimate package? There's got to be some way we can cut down on our bill while still keeping atleast HBO and showtime (can easily live without starz and cinemax). Is there any hope of lowering our bill or are we stuck with paying $155 a month? I like DTV and their service has been great so far but the price is starting to concern us slightly. If nothing can be done would it be worth switching to dish network? Comcast is more expensive and we can't get VZ Fios or AT&T Uverse.

It seems you are paying for the service you like.

Swap every 2 years! The only bad thing is learning the different remotes and getting use to them all over again! lol
Can't wait for Fios or uverse!

If you dropped Premiere for Choice you could just pay for HBO and Showtime you wouldn't be paying for Cinamax or Starz or the Sports package so you would see a drop in your bill.

ya i would go with choice extra and hbo and shotime

lets see, should be

$63 extra
$15 add rec
$12 hbo
$12 sho
$10 hd
$10 mrv dvr

=
$107?

id also call in and tell them you will cancel unless you get free hd like everyone else gets, and if they dont go ahead and switch to dish or get a new direct account in someone elses name

If you are not under contract, call, ask for retention, and calmly explain that you need to lower your bill. Of course, you can cut Starz and Cinemax, and most likely you'll get a temporary credit to help lower your costs. Again, this is assuming you're out of contract. If you are still under, you can still do the same, but the credits may not be as great.

Well I've found a way to lower it to $109 a month. Choice ultimate package, free HD (starting January), a free HD DVR receiver and HD receiver and adding showtime and HBO to the choice ultimate package would have it at $109. Wondering if the DVR is worth it as I've never really used it before, but have some friend who have it and they seem to like it. Is it worth getting DVR from DTV or could I get it from somewhere else (not Tivo...not paying that monthly BS from them unless im imagining things and they don't charge monthly) that doesn't have a monthly fee on it (with hopefully a reasonable price knowing that without monthly fee it's going to cost a good chunk more). Just gotta talk with fam about it hopefully it's to their liking.

Interesting if they go a-la-cart for the regional sports channels. If it's something like $2-$4 a channel I could save a bit of money out if the deal.

adding receivers makes the price go up, no matter what you do bill goes close to $100 with multiples HD DVRs. cable is cheaper if there are multiple tvs in the house. With long winter here TV is the most important entertainment I have and DVR is must for me other i can't watch TV, only live sports.

I had the same problem as yourself with Dish, and the same bills. My
wife kept complaining about the high television bill. So finally I agreed with her,and talked to Dish CSR's without a reasonable reduction in
rate for dropping the premiums. So after 6 years being on Ultimate with Dish, I cancelled my plans, and switched to Dtv. I am saving
about $100 per month, and just bumped up my Netflix to 3 dvd's
at a time. After two years, I probably will switch back to Dish if I get
a reasonable offer. Seems both Dish and Dtv aren't serious about
helping you until you actually cancel your plans with them and switch.
Then the threaten you with fees if the dvr's etc aren't returned to them within a 30 day period. That make me really want to stay with them. I see little difference between the two. PQ is about the same and each has some advantages over the other.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well. A year works out to $1860...I'd have a real hard time enjoying *any* form of entertainment for that much money!

I've found streaming netflix and hulu to be the bomb.

The only problem is, those services don't offer the NFL Sunday Ticket.
