Default Will DirecTV Retention give new customer pricing?

ok, my contract is up with DirecTV and I知 shopping around. Right now Dish has a deal for their 200+ channel package, HD, free DVR equipment, and 3 free months of HBO and Showtime, for around $55.00 with a two year contract. This rate will go up around $16 after the first year.

This is roughly comparable to the deal DirecTV is giving on the Choice Extra package will all the same stuff except for the HBO and Showtime I think, but DirecTV goes up around $21 after the first year.

I've done an exhaustive comparison of the programming options and both have their +'s and -'s. Both have some channels that the other doesn't and both have some HD that the other doesn't. I can post the whole comparison if somebody wants to see it later (don't have my notes in front of me) but my conclusion is that I like the DirecTV channel list better even though there are some HD stations on Dish I would like to have.

Anyway, this comparison is all based on the fact that they cost about the same, which is the case if I was a new customer looking to choose, but I知 already with DirecTV. So, does anyone have any insight on what Retention will say when I break this down (I知 going to say I知 canceling even though I知 not sure I want to). Any chance they will give me Choice Extra at the new customer price with the free DVR or is that asking too much. Also, to be honest I知 more of a fan of my existing package over the current choice extra. I have some HD channels that are not listed on the choice extra and I would hate to lose HD's I already have. Maybe asking to retain my current package, but with the $22 price discount and the free DVR is what I ultimately want....

your thoughts?

If you tell retention you're cancelling they might say - OKAY, we'll close your account and send boxes for you to use to return your receivers and hang up before you can say anything.

is that based on experience? seems unlikely given the competitive enviornment in the industry and some more general posts i've read.

Since no one here can make the deal your looking for, give them a call and report back here with your success story.

It's not based on experience, but it's a likely outcome.

The DIRECTV retention person isn't going to say - OMG !!! NOOOOOOOO !! Don't cancel !! We'll do anything you want !! Don't cancel !!

DirecTV will try to keep you. I called DTV today to cancel due to the fact that ESPN classic is now part of the sports pack. They were so quick to try and keep me subscribed. They offered my the sports pack free for a year, 2.99 a month for the Starz super pack, no HD access fees for a year, and they paid my bill for the next month. They did me quite well so see what they can do for you.

i called to cancel today, they upgraded me to better package for one year and $100 off. i was going to cable but will stay with DTV now. it will work but it is all on them and based on you account history. DTV have better DVR (more HD hours to record and network enable, in my case Esata on cable DVR was not active) and more HD channels. Give it a try.

Why are you asking this?

Call Directv and ask them!

Every scenario is different and so are a lot of the offers.

didn't have any time to call yesterday, but hopefully today or tomorrow. The reason I asked here first was because most of the stories I致e heard have been about them giving free this, free that etc, but I致e have not heard about them signing a existing customer back up using the new customer pricing deal, that's what I知 asking about. I know in other industries that is a policy--that those deals are not available to existing customers period, but in this environment when they are giving away this and that to retain customers I would have liked to have heard an example of an existing customer being resigned as a new customer, or a definitive answer from someone knowledgeable saying, no you will not qualify for that pricing period. guess those answers are not available here so I will just go into the call a little more blind than I would have liked.

ok, called this weekend and without too much trouble got the deal i was looking for. so, for anyone else trying to get a better deal here's what i got, again, my contract was up when i called.

$21 per month off my bill for 1 year. (basicly matching the new customer pricing)
Free upgrade from HD box to HD DVR box.
free showtime and Starz for 3 months.

overall i'm satisfied. the only real difference between this deal and the Dish network new customer deal is i'm getting Starz instead of HBO which is free for 3 months with Dish, but other than that the deals are pretty much the same and there is no way that small difference is worth the swtich. good job directv.
