Default Stupidest Questionn I've Ever Asked

Ohhh the pain...but I'll ask anyway.

Somebody gave me a combo DVD/VHS player with a bunch of outputs, even Component and S-video...and optical.

This is being fed into the bedroom TV, a big old CRT job which can only take composite or S-video.

Here's the dumb question: Is it possible to get the output from the VCR to input the TV via S-video?
It seems the S-video when hooked up will take a signal only from the DVD half of the system. Is S-video only for digital?

Have mercy on my dumb question...I SHOULD know this but I don't!

If I connect using composite (red, white, and yellow) I can input either my DVD or my VHS tape...when I connect the combo machine via S-video, only the DVD signal goes to the TV.
Is this normal?

Thinking back when VHS stand-alones were common I don't recall every seeing one with S-video out? Is S-video only for DIGITAL sources, like DVD's?

Most combo players have 2 separate outputs, 1 for the DVD player (S-Video) and 1 for the VHS (composite). Never the twain shall meet.

Yep, I think that's it in a nutshell and I just dug this nugget up:

The situation with VCRs is a bit unusual: the common S-Video connector was designed for Super VHS and Hi8 VCRs as a high-bandwidth video connection and has been used for the same purpose on a great number of other consumer devices, coming into greatest prominence with the rise of the DVD format. Many digital (and all Hi-8 and S-VHS-C camcorders) support S-Video out as well. Standard VHS VCRs do not put out a high enough resolution signal to saturate an S-Video connection, and therefore most such units (even those in combination units with DVD players, which commonly use S-Video or component outputs) require the output from the VHS deck to go through a composite video or RF connection.

Thanks.
