After it quit working and smelled like burning, this tv no longer does anything except for a faint ticking sound when plugged in. Any idea what to look for at this point? I checked a few things but came up with nothing.

Probably the High-voltage power supply--it's the most common thing to die in a CRT as it operates at both high-voltage and high-frequency which causes a lot of stress. Usually the switching transistors fry and you'll see a little smoke and smell a nasty burned plastic odor, after which the TV will be mostly dead--although sometimes it will still be completely functional (sound, channel changing), but no picture.
The only solution is to replace the power supply. If the transistors went, they probably took other things with them, or other things were already getting close to the edge, which led to the eventual failure of the transistors. If you're lucky, the power supply is all on one circuit board that can be replaced easily and cheaply, but many sets have parts of the power supply integrated onto their logic and video boards. If that's the case, it will be cheaper to buy a new TV as the cost of parts and labor will be excessive. Did you get an extended warranty? I wouldn't consider buying an Insignia product (especially a CRT) without it. |

It's not likely a single part--most likely a few components on the power supply board are fried and the best bet is to replace the whole board or you run the risk of frying the new components you replace.

Ok, what if it's not a separate board and everything having to do with the power supply is all on the main board? I think its all one. Then maybe i should change nearly everything in that area. If thats the case, where and what all do i change?

I think you would be better served by replacing that TV with something of newer technology and better reliability.

I'm sorry to say this but it sounds like the Hitachi would cost as much to repair as it would to replace with something like a new Vizio.

That's your opinion as there are thousands and thousands of Vizio owners who would disagree with you as do I.

This IS the HighDef Forum and here we talk about and discuss new technologies, trends and ideas. If you choose to stay in the past, that is all good and well for you. But discounting a brand of product because you know absolutely nothing about it is just plain and simply ridiculous.
Two of the brands you mentioned are currently not high quality. RCA is a bottom tier, cheap product. Zenith is now a low end product made by LG and has it's problems as well. Please educate yourself before making such absurd claims.
