I'm curious if there exists a thing as a REGULAR old HDTV. For instance, is there such a thing as a TV that is NOT slim and costs $1000?
I'm looking to buy an HDTV that is still sturdy and lengthy in the back, if that makes sense (probably doesn't). Do these exist? |

Are you looking for a CRT (tube) HDTV?? If so they are quite scarce now a days. Why do you want a TV that is "still sturdy and lengthy in the back"? Flat panel technology is very solid, especially now a days. They still make a few CRT's tube HDTV's. Sony stopped making them a couple years or so ago, but you may find a new 34'' Sony floating around on the net. Or perhaps a Samsung Slimfit 30''. But that is about it unless you hit E-bay. And 34'' is as big as you can get.. You can get the same size or bigger in a LCD vs a tube...But some people still love the PQ. But seeing you can get a 42'' plasma for under G note now..Why.

I assume they'd be cheaper and I'd like to be able to find a 32" HDTV for a decent price ($500-$700 is a bit steep for my wallet, and I don't want a completely unheard of off-brand).

Well, around $500-$700 is about the best your gonna do in a 32'' LCD TV. If you have a Costco or Sam's near you, I recommend trying there. Costco had a Toshiba 32'' LCD onsale for $599 and the PQ was great. And I am sure you heard of Toshiba B4. I can't find the link for it anymore but they do show the Sharp Aquos 32'' model onsale for $649...And if you don't have a Costco or Sam's, Walmart has a few good deals like the Vizio 32'' for $599. Vizio has been around for a few years now and has a very good rep as of now..

Sorry, when I first glanced over your post, I thought that was you budget and then I edited it..
Well, around $550 to $600 is going to be the cheapest you are gonna find a new 32'' LCD TV now a days. Even if you go smaller to say 26'', your still going to spend $450 or so. And a 26'' is just to small for an HDTV IMO unless it is in the kitchen or something like that. You can find a decent deal on used TV's on Ebay, but doubt you want to go that way. The only other thing I can recommend other than to keep saving up is to check all around your local B&M stores like BB and CC. See if you can get any killer deals on 32'' returns or a display model... BTW HD CRT's like the Sony Wega 34'' were over a $1000 when they came out.. Another reason why CRT's are dead now.. The Samsung Slimfit 30'' was quite a bit cheaper at around $700, but still weak.

One other thing popped up. I doubt you want to wait until November/December but.. You will find some very good Black Friday sales going on. If you are willing to camp out in line, you can get some fantastic deals on LCD TV's. Just an option if you are still looking in a few months.

Another idea would be either a DLP or LCD projection TV. You could find one of those in a 50" size for about $1000. They look great but are deeper than the traditional flat screen.

I found an "Tube" 30 inch HDTV on Amazon for $350 about a year ago. It was refurbished, but it works great. I mainly use it with my PS3, and it has an HDMI input.

You can find old stuff at ebay or yahoo auctions. Tv sets have a lifetime think about it if you decide to buy used. But if you find something new go for it.

My main HDTV is a Sony WEGA KV34HS420 flat panel wide-screen that weights a whopping 196 lbs. It's wide (39"),modestly tall (26") and fairly deep (24") and when properly calibrated (Avia or Avia II Guide To Home Theater Set-Up Disc) it's one of best CRT-based televisions ever produced!
They can be had on EBay and other sources for as low $350.00 (not counting S&H), when I purchased mine some 4 1/2 years ago I paid $1399.00 (When first released they cost a budget-busting $1899.00!). They have a function know as DRC which replaces "the NTSC waveform with the HD equivalent while doubling the number of vertical AND horizontal lines resulting in four times the density for quality sources" (taken from the owner's manual). Believe me, it's the BEST T.V i've ever owned (and so far it's stood the test of time). There are many other really excellent sets out there but at this price-point this one's hard to beat feature for feature. |

I paid about $500 for a display model 26" CRT a couple years ago, which was a decent savings from flat-panels at that time. These days if you can even find a new CRT tv the price difference is pretty minimal.
