Hi guys, I have a problem I was hoping I could get some help with.
I have a Toshiba 30HF84, have had it for about 3 years with no issues. Two nights ago, I turned it on using the universal remote from my STB, and it shut itself off again. When I turned it back on, the display was messed up. It looks like a piece of paper with a curve in it, and the display is now too large for the screen (OSD's which are supposed to be in the corners are now barely on the screen, most of it is off-screen). For an idea of what I mean by the display looks "curved", see below: |--------------------| |--------------------| /---------------------\ /-----------------------\ /-------------------------\ \-------------------------/ \-----------------------/ \---------------------/ |--------------------| |--------------------| (apparently it won't let me put spaces before the left side slashes. The left is a mirror image of the right in my issue) This effect varies in intensity and location (sometimes more/less bowing, sometimes lower than the middle of the screen) depending on what is on screen at the time. Sometimes instead of the middle bowing out, the bottom is "pinched" in (think "Hourglass waist"). Can anyone tell me what the problem may be, and what an estimated cost to fix it may be? |

Looks like a power supply problem.
It would be hard to estimate the repair cost as there is no way of knowing if replacement parts are available for older models. Most likely any Tech is going to charge you around $100 just to open it up and make a quick diagnosis without repairing anything (they usually charge, rather arbitrarily, more for HDTV's than regular TV's). If it's the power supply, there will be the cost of a replacement module (if available--probably between $100 and $200) and labor for installation and re-alignment, so you're probably looking at $300-$500. The sad thing is, it might just be a bad capacitor, but most Techs would replace the whole power supply because it might take a lot of labor time to determine which specific component is bad, versus a short time to replace the power supply module. It might end up costing you more money to replace a $2 part than a $150 power supply. |

Hmm, if it's $300-$500 to repair, it would make more sense to just pony up a little extra cash and invest in a new set. Thanks for the info. I was hoping it was something really simple that would be a cheap fix.

Nothing is cheap to fix anymore unless you know someone who likes to do it for fun.
You could pay the $75-$100 to find out what's wrong--it might be something cheap... |
