I purchased the Samsung TXP2670WH back in October 2004 from Best Buy at a very reasonable price. ($650) I have been having the same problem ever since. The left and right sides of the screen have a "scale Like" image. Almost as if the scan velocity modulation or something else is not able to focus in/on time during moving scenes. I have called Best Buy but they are stating the extended warranty does not "kick in" till after 1 year. After 355 calls to Samsung, they were able to send out a TV Technician. He was able to visibly see and identify the problem but would only state..."you should have gone with a DLP" and the velocity scan modulation is not the best Samsung put into the set....Uh...Ok...The TV Tech also stated everything else with the TV is sharp and on "Samsung Spec". Samsung has yet to get back to me. I am not sure if I want to get the TV replaced by Samsung because the TV Tech stated Samsung would more than likely send me an "open box/refurb". Has anyone else run into this unique problem?
Again, the only way I can describe it is the left and right side of the screen have a "scale like" image during motion scenes. |

I have to go observe mine but I got nothing like you describe and I shoot video myself and evaluate my edited footage on this HDTV. I got a progressive scan DVD connected to it as well as my computer via DVI. I observe nothing like you describe. Is there a chance you can video tape this or capture it in some way?

I wouldn't be able to record it because I have not owned a VHS VCR in years. I can try and capture it with a digital camera. I will let you know. Thanks for the reply and the interest. I am really banging my head on this one.

You are only able to see it when there is a motion scene. Stare and focus on the left and right sides of the television screen and you will be able to spot it.

wait a minute, you said 'scale-like'..do you mean MOSAIC? COmmonly known as ALIASING in computer parlance? If so I think this is normal for digital signals specially when there is not enough bandwidth to handle a lot fo information specially when things are moving. I don't know if HDTV signals employ motion-analysis algorithms to save on bandwidth the way MEPEG-2 does. On mine I onlt notice this when the signal strength is at 3-4 level. This is psecially evident on stations that SPLIT the digital signal to one or more digital signals. You can tell this by the number of SUB-channels like 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3. Not all OTA stations are broadcasting in FULL POWER so when there is a lot of data to display and the bandwidth is not there, the HDTV displays 'mosaic' or 'aliasing' on the areas that are fast moving.
I have however turned off the VSM on my set manually. SVM mainly controls the amount of light and dark edges in the set specially the transition areas between light and dark areas so if the bandwidth is not there and there is a lot of motion plus the areas are high contrast ALIASING surely will happen and would be more pronounced. |

Zneg1, thank you so much. I think you are one very intelligent individual when it comes to the technical aspect of television and HD.
You are the only who actually gave me an intelligent and focused, honest description of my problem/situation. 2-TWO other "certified" tech's came to my apartment and told me it was the "scan velocity modulation", which was not in par with the best?!?! Whatever that means. Oh and that I should have purchased a DLP. It was a big bother and becoming a "eye-catching-spot" but after more viewing and realizing the features the set has, I am still pleased with the model/set. I just purchsed the Samsung HD941 to go along with it and it does re-create a magnifient picture. Again, thank you so much Zneg1 for taking the time to answer and investigate my situation. |

Zneg... HDTV is broadcast using a MPEG2 @ high level profile stream. What you've called splitting the signal is properly called multicasting - which CAN reduce quality on the main channel if they let it.
The power used by your broadcaster determines how far the signal will travel, but is not related to bandwidth. As long as you have sufficient power to excite your receiver, you will get the full bandwidth. |
