What is HD?

hello, new to the forum. I have a Phillips HD tv widescreen 16:9 ratio. I have a Sony DVD with progressive scan. My problem is when I press the progressive scan button on the DVD player, the 1080i screen shows but each side of the screen goes black but the middle is crystal clear, and the black on each side is about 8" thick and is in a sideways wave type pattern on each side. the color part next to the black starts to warp and then the black starts. i have monster high def component cables plugged into the correct areas of both devices. any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are the model numbers of the TV and DVD player?
Do you have the DVD player set for widescreen--most allow you to select widescreen, letterbox or zoomed/cropped (pan&scan)? Do you have the TV set for full screen or some other mode (zoom, stretch or normal/natural)? Are you watching full-screen, anamorphic widescreen or letterbox widescreen DVD's? How does it act when you turn progressive scan off? Also, some progressive scan DVD players have multiple progressive scan modes to minimize artifacts on different displays. They either cycle through the modes by pushing the progressive scan button repeatedly or there is a menu option or button on the remote. |
