Default Normal for 4:3 screen showing 16:9???

I like my new Panasonic 32" HDTV Monitor (CT-32HXC14).
But, when watching letterboxed/widescreen dvd's, there's a tiny line at the top and bottom of the picture, right before the black bar, where the picture is brighter. It's almost like an accentuated border on top and bottom (not L/R though).
Looks somewhat like:
Quote:

***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
----------------brighter picture--------------------
-----------------------picture----------------------
-----------------------picture----------------------
...
-----------------------picture----------------------
-----------------------picture----------------------
----------------brighter picture--------------------
***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
I noticed this watching LoTR1:EE and also We Were Soldiers; however, in WWS, there was a tiny black horizontal line right below/above the last line or two of picture, so it looked like:
Quote:

***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
-------picture---------
***************black bar***************
-----------------------picture----------------------
-----------------------picture----------------------
...
-----------------------picture----------------------
-----------------------picture----------------------
***************black bar***************
-----------------------picture----------------------
***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
***************black bar***************
Wondering if it is a problem with the TV (still returnable to CC), dvd player, dvd disc, or what...
Normal 4:3 viewing is fine with no change in picture where the letterbox bars would go. Only the letterbox dvds that I'm noticing this on.
Thanks

the first is normal. But the second sounds like a problem.

I would go back to the store and check for the same problems in another unit...

I have a problem with an oscillating Vertical sync bar that remains at the top of my HDTV screen on quite a few channels. The rest of my channels (SD and HD) are ok. It seems that if i could stretch my vertical somehow, i could eliminate this. What could this be? I don't see it on my standard 32 inch CRT tv.I have tried 3 different HDTV receivers.

I'd look into the DVD player. The letterbox bands aren't created by the TV, they're created by the DVD player.

Are you watching actual letterbox DVD's (says "letterbox" on the package) or Anamorphic DVD's ("enhanced for widescreen TV") that the DVD player is converting to letterbox?

Are you using an upconverting DVD player?
