what type of tv has been made for what some 60 yrs now? CRT's. It seems they know how to make these. But the Flat panels are a new thing. I bought the same set a few yrs ago. $600.00. new in box. My son has a sharp 40" and it looks pretty good. But I am into my 34" set that takes up a part of my room, but so does my amp and other equipment. The problem is, this, It was the last crt made by Sony. They (rumor) did not give it the same treatment as the model year before: several features were not included. Leading to the rumor it was the kvhs420 just painted black with new menus. I have both sets. There IS a difference in pq. at least 30% brighter colors. We put them side by side, with same input. (oppo bdp 93 w/dual hdmi ports.) There is a noticable diff.

PQ was a bit better than my plasma, but nothing to write home about.. Being around 20'' smaller probably had much to do with the slight PQ diff.. Now that you can get a 50'' 1080p plasma for under a G note, that says it all rite there..Makes for a very nice spare bedroom TV now though..
possibly a size issue?? compensating?? the ego?

It sounds like you are describing the KD34XBR970 which was definitely not in the same league PQ-wise as the KD34XBR960. The XBR970 was an upgraded HS420 not a downgraded XBR960.

Cool

I had a 960 for six years until it died and it had an outstanding picture except for resolution. a 1080P lcd is sharper but with poor contrast compared to crt. The other thing I didnt like was small screen and heavy weight of the set.
