Default noob question concerning 16:10 monitor

hello

i just recently bought a new computer and 2 nice new monitors that support hdcp. i have a nvidia 8800gt video card and my 2 monitors are; hp w2207h and dell e228wfp. they are both 16:10 monitors. which i never even knew existed until i got these suckers home and plugged them in lol. im trying to use the nvidia control panel to set the resolution to 720p. but when i do, it forces them to a 16:9 resolution, so i just use the "non-hd" resolutions to keep the correct aspect. my question is this; if i play an hd video file within these non-hd resolutions, will it play in hd or will it be downgraded? not sure if im explaining everything that i need to to get a proper answer, but any help would be appreciated.

thx

If you set the resolution to 1280x720 they will display at that resolution, which is HD. Don't worry about the 16:10 vs 16:9, it all works itself out.

1280x1024 and 1280x800 can both show 720P and 480P without scaling.

1920x1200 can show 1080P with no scaling, and 720P and 480P with tidy 1.5x scaling.

1680x1050 and 2560x1600 don't scale to either resolution well. Your calculator will tell you the same thing.

You don't want to set the resolution of your monitor to a 16:9 resolution, tho. Set it to the native 16:10 resolution, and the 16:9 video will play with black bars at the top and bottom.

I realize those apple 30" displays are gorgeous, but right now, i think the best possible display is 1920x1200, as it works equally well as a television, and a monitor.

While it is close, not really HD. Need at least 1280x720 for a HD resolution, but I suspect the picture at your resolution is very good. Like heyman said, setting the resolution to the native resolution of your monitor will be best.
