The USB cable is as long as you need, mine is about 3 feet.

Yes I have the computer in the same room with the HDTV. I have HTPCs that are designed to run quiet enough.

I use the WD HD media player to connect to my wife's HDTV. I load her HDD with the movie she wants and then she plays it. Works good for her because with only one movie, she can find it easily.
Well WD TV HD pretty easy to hook up to unlimited HDD either removable or jumpdrive.

Okay the HPVR uses PC to record from Digital HD DVR from the Cable Company.

So you got a chore to do record then put it on either a 32GB jumpdrive or 500GB HDD USB. To bad all this could be network in a way so you can write a script to transfer the files you want to your WD TV HD -- USB HDD device all in one shot on the LAN.

Anyway those who are interested in the WD TV HD can go to DELL HOME and get it for $30 bucks less. You only have until 1/15/09 then it goes back up in price. $119. Buy.com and Amazon have free shipping for $118. DELL even though it's $89.99 you still get hit with paying for shipping to your area, and tax. Should come out to $102 so you'll save $16 compare to the Amazon and Buy.com.

Boy I told someone they had this for $89.99 they told me they got it for $79.99 plus tax, shipping out the door $100 bucks..

Rich,

Can you play more than one video or say play it all. If you had music videos can you play them one after the other without stopping to go to the next one manually?

There are many posts on this board or on AnyDVD HD board that will explain the steps way better than I could. Then I would use a program called Tsmuxer to convert the file into m2ts file, but before you do that you need to make sure the English or other language you want to watch the movie with audio file is not DTS HD. If it is, then you will need to demux the video stream into both a video file and an audio file by using TSmuxer. Then use an audio convertion program called EA3TO to convert the DTS HD into AC3 file that most of video convertion programs will understand. After that, use TSmuxer to re-mux the video and AC3 files back into one m2ts file. For some older Blu-ray discs you can use Nero 9's Nero vision to convert the m2ts into MPEG 2 HD which WD Media Player will play. Somehow Nero vision doesn't works on newer Blu-Ray titles. For those I use Alive HD Video Converter. Both TSmuxer and EA3TO are freeware, but Alive HD Video Converter is not.

Messing around with Blu-Ray DVD files, I'll tell you, it's not for the faint of heart and often you will be doing this than not.
I guess this confirm that this player can play BR ripped file. I may consider this player if I can not get PS3 in time. TSmuxer has the option for you to check to down convert the HD audio to AC3...so you dont have to use other sw to convert the audio.

Sorry I missed this earlier, Tip.

If you put files in different folders, then you can use the folders to select a group of files to be played. Once you select a folder, then either a single file can be played or all of the files in the folder can be played one after the other. It is also possible to play all of the files one after another on the whole disk as well as select a particular file by looking at all video files reguardless of what folders they are in. It is very flexable.

Why the one or the other? They seem to me to be intended for different uses.

I may buy back a used PS3 from a friend for 100 or 150. I can do more with PS3....but my primary use is to play the media files on big screen tv in our livingroom for my kids. So if my friend decides not to sell his PS3 anymore, then I can try this player.

I am not going to buy BR player any time soon...So I am trying to use the obove method to watch new BR movie on my main TV.

Default WD HD audio hook up

I've been looking at the WD HD too, but have only seen it online. Does it connect to a tuner to play soundtracks, MPs, etc? I have an older Yamaha tuner w/ only RCA and a couple optical inputs. Can the WD be connected to this, given the above tuner info? Thanks

Yes it can. It has stereo analog outputs as well as an optical output. You do need a TV of some sort to use the menus though. In addition to the USB hard drive you can plug in a second USB device like a memory stick.

Default thanks rbinck!

Thanks for the info! I have a TV with HDMI to use with the WD HD, and I think the tuner I have will work ok as well. I read a recent post on a different site regarding the WD HD that said it had lots of problems 'freezing'. The user was very frustrated with the performance. Have you had any similar issues? He apparently returned the unit 3 times and encountered problems with each unit. Most reviews I have read seem favorable. Thanks again.

More internal view of the device and what not what, still good device..http://maddhat.com/?p=31
Now you might be able to use NAS that can also act as an attached USB drive.

Here are 3 NAS that you can use next to the WD TV HD connected USB and the NAS 10/100 or NAS 10/100/1000 port.. Transfers files to the NAS and then let the WD TV HD pull in the files using USB.

LaCie Ethernet Big Disk - 1 TB (301156U)
LaCie Ethernet Disk mini V2 - 500 GB (301138U)
Buffalo DriveStation FlexNet (HD-CE500LU2)

Hi I recently purchased the WD TV HD Media Player I used to use the PS3 for my videos but got sick of converting large files.
It is excellent for the price but I feel it isnt as good as the PS3 for both sound and video but still very good.

I am having 1 main problem with this is when I go to the system settings to upgrade the firmware there is no upgrade icon is this an issue with my box or am I doing some thing wrong.

Thank you

Anyone use the player from Popcorn Hour or Egreat? Their price is higher, but I like that they support internal hard drive.

Some of the dual connection drives will only work with one or the other connection. Are you saying these will allow access through both the LAN and USB ports access at the same time?
