I don't think the WD player will be a very good choice for internet video streaming. There is no browser in the device, so finding the videos to play is not possible. I think you are probably talking about some sort of a PC for what you need to do, but keep looking because you never know what may come on the market next.

I'm in the same boat as you. My wife would like to ditch the cable also. I started out with the WDTV and like it, but it’s very limited and would not be a good choice for replacing cable. If you hack the firmware and if you get the WDTV to network it’s not going to be user-friendly or wife friendly. After hours and hours of reading forums I came onto a suggestion that might be worth looking into its called the Popcorn Hour A 110. With Popcorn Hour you can stream or playback digital media content from a huge variety of sources, such as your PC, network-attached storage, digital camera or USB storage (Flash drive, HDD, DVD drive). I have had mine for about two weeks now and like it a lot. Very wife and kids friendly. It was easy to setup and get running. I run it off my NAS and streams HD flawlessly
