Ok so Im looking into a external hard drive, actually the WD My Book. I have heard some good and bad things about it, What i want to do is use it on my network, so that i can access it with my desktop and so my girlfirend can get all her junk of her laptop and still be able to get to it!
So WD has the My book world(WDG1NC5000N) I dont care about the Mionet software, i just want to be able to access it at home, not from the Saraha desert....DO i need to get this hard drive or would the other non world HD work on a network? I like the look of it, Im not gonna use it everyday. SO i think it fits my needs, just not sure if all Hard drives can work on a network! Any personal experiences with this one? thanks alot newb |

I dont have personal experience with this hard drive, but it should meet your need. From the hdd's spec, you just plug into your network (router), and anyone from your network should be able access it.

I bought the WD My Book World Edition (NAS), but after changing the gateway, something went wrong I wasn't able to re-connect to the drive again, but that was my case, some people don't have any problems with it. I returned it and got a WD My Book Pro II Edition instead.
Way I see it... NAS -Network Attached Storage: If you want shared storage over the network via ethernet only and some data protection - Eg: WD My Book World II with RAID1 drive mirroring. Options: 1. No Drives - NetGear SC101 2. Drives included - WD My Book World II Note: Make sure it supports 'Jumbo Frames' if you want GigaBit ethernet. DAS - Direct Attached Storage: External storage connected via eSata, FireWire (800/400) or USB. Can be shared over network, via OS, but conected computer needs to be left running. Note: Preferable to opt for eSata interface to get full performance. Fastest being eSata then FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) then FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394a) lastly USB 2.0 Options: 1. No Protection - Seagate FreeAgent Pro 2. RAID1 Protection - WD My Book Pro II I'd suggest check out other buyer reviews from Amazon or your fav online tech store. |

I'm gonna pop my 2 cents in here. Unless something has changed in the last 6 months, stay far, far away from the Netgear NAS, I had one for 2 days before returning it, it's a pice of crap, has tons of bugs, and is not a true NAS as it requires client software to be installed on any machine you want to be able to access it. It brought my network to it's knees because it had no option for a static IP, which I use on my network, and even though I set my router to assign it an IP, it was contantly pounding the DHCP server even after it was assigned an IP and was accessable on the network.
