PC to HDTV issues ...

That begs the question of how you are going to watch HDTV and simutaneously running apps in the bedroom. You can see why the assumption.

ok, i need a pci-e video card to watch HD movies stored on my computer harddrive and displayed on my sony 30" hdtv capable of 720p and 1080i. when not watching hd movies, ill be using my pc for everything else on my samsung 17" lcd (vga). which card should i get thats best suited towards HD output to my tv? im thinking component is best way to cnnect them? thanks

Any video card with component outputs should do the trick for you. ATI has a very cheap component adapter for some of their cards and a lot of HTPC owners use the ATI solution. I use an ATI 7500 card that has both VGA and DVI outputs. I use a VGA to component transcoder (www.keydigital.com) for one HDTV (with the monitor) and the DVI connection for the other HDTV.

But truthfully, I have a DVD player on both HDTVs for movie watching. A DVD player will actually be cheaper (and better) than the cost of a new video card. Better because you don't have the overscan issues with a DVD player that you will have with the PC.

With that TV, you will want to output 1080i and 480p. 1080i will be great for movies, but give a horrible desktop. You'll need to switch to 848 x 480p for a decent desktop in progressive scan. Component will work fine, as will VGA or DVI.

mmm.... so i cant just type up school papers on ms word on my samsung 17"lcd (vga port), then take a break and watch an hd movie in the other room on my sony hdtv (component port) without having to change settings on the pc to adjust for overscan and other issues regularly?

arnt most cards now dual head, 1 dvi and 1 vga, or 2 dvi? would i keep having to unplug the monitor for the tv to be recognized and vice versa?

Hi, I’m new and any help would be very appreciated. I recently purchased one of the new aquos sharp lcd HDTV’s. It has almost every input imaginable. I also have a very good computer and I bought an ATI x850 platinum edition AGP graphics card. It has DVI output of course. So I bought a DVI-I to HDMI cable and ran it from my graphics card to the HDMI slot on my tv. It works great at displaying movies, pictures, and some games, however, when I initially boot, I cannot see my boot up text (where it detects the drives, and goes through your standard bootup process). After the bootup process however, I can use it just fine. Moreover I am a very big gamer and I was very excited about playing Battlefield 2 on my new TV in hi-def. But when I tried to play that game it crashes out before it even loads. Additionally a few of my other games to not run very smoothly. I also found out that in my games I can no longer adjust the resolution. I believe it may be the DVI-I : HDMI cable that is preventing things from working properly because I hooked up another lcd monitor (dell 17”) with an RGB cable it all games worked great and the boot up text was there. So what I’m looking for is someone to confirm whether it is the DVI-I:HDMI cable that is preventing the games from working properly or something else entirely. Again, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Since you bought a TV and not a computer monitor, it will be limited to ATSC resolutions and the native resolution. Also the refresh must be 60 Hz. Most likely your games are trying to set a 75Hz refresh which most monitors like the one you tried will not have a problem with.

That's what dualhead is for... to run two displays at once. Your displays will have different resolutions...

You can run two different resolutions on each monitor, that's how mine is setup here, 1152*864 on my computer monitor and 1920*1080 on my DVI/HDTV port.

I'm running a GEFORCE FX 5950 nvidia card to a Sony Wega 60" lcd hd tv and have had similar issues trying to run anything other than 1080i modes.

I'm using DVI > HDMI (the card has vga and dvi outputs) and tried messing with VGA > Component but it looks terrible (i'm using a converter box) and cant even get 16:9 to work on the TV with that. But, with the DVI, the text looks crappy and the dvd movies/pc games are somewhat pixilated...

I'm thinking progressive (720p) would look better but I've had issues with that... are there any tips using this card with this TV out there? And for clarity/HD quality which mode is best? Should I get a new card/try better component cables?

BTW I do have powerstrip, but that only caused me more frustration...

Alright im going to hop on the bandwagon.

TV: SAMSUNG HDTV CRT 1080i (HC-R4351W ) No DVI input

Current Vid Card: GeForce MX4000 (VGA and Svid)

Looking to upgrade to:
Geforce AGP 6200 256mb. "overclocked by nVidia" (Has DVI input)$99
or
Geforce AGP 6600 GT 128mb (Has DVI input)$170

Now, The tv does not have dvi. So il have to go component...

While going component is there a benefit from adapting DVI>Component rather than VGA>Component?
i dont want to have to unplug my monitor to play a game on TV...

Is this a good choice on a video card? Im doing mostly gaming on the TV everything else on the regular monitor. I know it wont be crystal clear but right now we have S-video. Nuff said.

Get a 6600GT card with Component output... you can use that instead of VGA or DVI. It's a seperate output, not adapted from the VGA or DVI port.
