Can a 3d Vision-capable video card be connected to a 3Dtv/monitor via a DVI to HDMI cable, or does it have to originate from HDMI on the video card for the 3D for function properly?

I'm completely unfamiliar with 3D Video Cards but do know that my Panasonic 3D TV recognizes a 3D signal from every source I've tried: 3D BluRay (HDMI), 3D games on the XBox 360 (HDMI), USB thumbstick, the TV's YouTube App, wireless streaming from my PC (which isn't 3D capable), and my DirecTV (HDMI) receiver. So I can assume it's not dependent on an HDMI cable.

Since the main difference between DVI and HDMI is the audio, I would think the 3D would display since video cards were using it before HDMI existed.

HDMI and DVI are essentially the same signal-wise, with the exception of HDCP (content protection). It shouldn't be an issue in your case since HDCP is usually implemented the other way around (an HDMI device feeding a DVI input).
