They changed when someone got killed, can't remember who it was however.
They said a large majority of engine failures where at the end of the race.

Scott Kalaita was killed at Englishtown last year. They are racing at E-Town this weekend.

The biggest change they have made so far is to the tracks themselves. They have made major upgrades to the "runoff" area - now concrete walls with very high steel renforced catch fences and multiple catch nets and finally water filled barrels.

I believe(?) that every NHRA sanctioned track where they run nitro cars has to make the improvements.

Here is what E-Towns new runoff area looks like:

Are you going in reverse order? concrete then catch fence, then water?

That is what I said;

First the concrete walls with the catch fences on top of them, then the catch nets (2) and finally the water barrels.

This is from the standpoint of standing on the start line, doing a run, having both the brakes and parachutes fail - what you will hit until the car finally stops.

Of course the pea gravel is still there (about a foot deep) all the way from the end of the track to the water barrels.
