Default How fast have you guys driven?

I guess i'll start another thread out of curiosity. What's the fastest speed that you've done in a car or on a bike? Going at these felonious speeds is not smart, but many of us car enthusiasts have done it when traffic conditions allow for us to do it without jeapordizing the lives of other people.

141 mph in the 99 Taurus SHO
155mph in the 02 Honda S2000
135mph in the 02 SVT Lightning
141mph in the 01 SVT Cobra
135mph in my current 06 Trailblazer SS

Had both my 74 Monte Carlo (400ci 4 barrel) and 72 Firebird well buried past the 120 mph max, so don't know for sure. Man, I could still see the gas needle drop The fastest (I was riding shotgun) was in my friends Ford GT Torino with a 428 Cobra Jet. 150 mph with plenty of gas pedal left and chirpin in all gears. That thing (stock) was unbelievable. Add a racing Cam and it was scary. Even came with a roll cage. That came in handy when he downshifted at over a hundo, droped the driveshaft and flipped it on I-55. Man those were good times....

Cobra SVT at only 140 mph. Where you still in 2nd gear?

Ironically, the top speed on the 99-01 Cobra's was 149mph. This was due to gearing, as they didn't come with a 6 speed transmission till the 03 Terminators. I was in 4th gear, which maxes out at 149mph with the engine at 6800rpms. 5th gear is just too tall to overcome the wind resistance at those speeds, as it was geared for fuel economy. What's ironic is that my Cobra got 31mpg on the highway.

Yea certainly speeds Ive been to on the track and on the street vary greatly...on the street/highway Im not one for excessive speed, although Im always up for a spirit stoplight run up to 60 or so .
Well at the track my drag bike is certainly my fastest vehicle...I usually hit the traps at about 180 or so,but as you can imagine,in the 1/4 mile that feels very odd. Cant even imagine how fast the bike can go with a smaller rear sprocket...either way i dont think I'd be up for that ride Other than that, in a car I guess the fastest ive been was about 140-145 in the Vette, but again that wasnt on the street.

I had my lightning up to about 130-135, on the stretch of I-95 right as you cross from Delaware to PA. I was on the tail end stretch of a long trip home from Myrtle and the Eagles were playing their first preseason game against the Stillers. I was in a hurry to get home for the festivities. The burst was only once I'd gotten to the front of a pack of traffic. I don't do this around others. It's a little rude to pass someone at twice their speed.

Other cars top speeds w/ me...
98 Prelude - 115
S2000 - 105 (it gets pretty loud over 75 in those things!)

Somewhat related...

I've fallen at over 120mph, which is V-Max for a free fall skydive from 13,000 ft. The deceleration upon chute deployment herniated 2 discs in my neck. But it was worth it.

If you go by speedometer readings I once had a '66 Thunderbird speedo buried. That would indicate in excess of 120 mph, but speedometers are very inaccurate above about 90 mph and usually read high in most production units. Therefore I'd guess a more reasonable speed would be 110 mph or so.

Once in my Falcon convertible I put the speedometer on 120 mph which sported a Mallory 160 mph speedometer and it was probably pretty accurate. I chickened out at that point so I still don't know how fast the car will go, but the engine was at about 3,700 rpms in OD and I'd guess it would have enough HP to push the car (which has the areodynamics of a brick) to 4,500 rpm or so, but I'll never know.

In my VR4 at the track I clocked in at 125, my speedometer showed I was going 140.

Big difference.

If you get a speedo on the bench you can check its accuracy. Most domestic speedos use 1000 rpm for 60 mph, 2000 rpm for 120 mph, etc. Using a single speed reversing drill motors you can check at 1000 and 2000 rpms pretty easily. The input to the speedos are CCW.

It is also important to know the gearing and tire size to know if your speedo will be close to accurate. Most peformance outlets for any given car will have the tables to check this.

The top speed of 155mph in the S2000 was done the day before I sold it off. Even though I had the hardtop on, it was still deafening at that speed. I didn't take my eye off the road, but did notice that I was doing like 8200-8500 rpms.

As for passing someone at twice their speed, it all depends on who it is and how fast they are initially driving. You should see some of these old bastards around our part of town. There is one old grey hair that I encounter in the morning commute that get's on the highway in his Jaguar XJ8 or BMW 760i every morning and heads straight for the high speed lane while doing 45mph maximum. Of course, then there is the old lady I sometimes encounter on my commute home who heads straight for the high speed lane in her Lexus LS430 and slows down to 40 mph or so.

Then i've also encountered a billionaire once in a while by the name of Carl Lindner who heads straight for the high speed lane and drives 45mph in his Bentley or Rolls Royce Phantom...........

Let's see. In the Corvette I had it up to 171 on the HUD. The Honda 1000RR I've had to about 160 but sportbikes speedos are usually off a good 10% so it was probably around 145 or so.

These were both on the street.

lol, when I said twice their speed, I kinda meant to say it's rude to pass someone at 135 when they're all doing a fairly reasonable 70 mph

Yea I cant say for sure either with the speedo being off for the bikes on the street...the ZX-12 I posted the pic of earlier I had the speedo saying 180-185 on the PA turnpike but probably not that close to it....although I will say it made my bunghole quiver..that "hand of god" feeling

I had my stock 2006 Chrysler minivan at about 110 on the way to Peoria a couple weeks back Haha . Hey, its a company car so what the heck. Maybe next year they will start putting Hemi's in them.
But that Ford GT Torino with the Cobra Jet and racing Cam was just a tad faster than my minivan..
