I get a kick out of the warnings they have with ovens that says - Don't open the oven door and stand on it to get into a cabinet above the oven area. Some dumbass idiots must have done it, got hurt, and sued the oven manufacturer for not having a warning about it.
I'm surprised they don't have a warning that says - Don't lick the stove burners to see if they are still hot.

Frightening throttle sticking!

Tonight I had a 20 mile errand to pick up a couple kids at the movie theater so I took the 456M. Normal procedure; start it up and pull out of the garage at idle (I always back in) and stop and close the door and let it idle for 45-60 seconds to start warming up. All is good.

I then get into the cul de sac and being respectful of neighbors I calmly motor out to the main road. After a mile or two I get on it alittle to feel some torque in 2nd gear and the throttle stays open! Scares the crap out of me but the brakes pull me down and before I have to turn the key and risk steering lock issues the throttle releases. I careful continue and experiment and it only occurs in heavy throttle so I gear up to 4th figuring it'll be easier to brake it down if it happens. I realize that when it sticks I can pump it a few times and it releases every time. I decide to continue since I'm now only a mile or two away from the theater. Since I'm early (always) I pull under a light and start trying to figure out what to do.

I shut down and restart- no change. I then get out and open the hood and quickly realize that even though I've rebuilt/restored dozens of cars with my own hands, I'm not going to really learn anything in the dark with this baby.

Then it occurs to me. I close the hood and fix the problem in 2 seconds.

It was the floor mat- it had released from the retaining grommets and bunched up against the torque tube tunnel and was binding the pedal but only on return for some reason.

Scary though...
What happened to you makes me think this recent recall should be a red flag for all auto makers to check for such conditions more closely, or even car mat mfrs. to provide more slip proof attachments, etc. before the ambulance chasers start in on the after-market products.

Okay, I guess I don't feel so bad for being so cruel with my first post under this topic.

I guess it is a sad fact of life that people are idiots. Theorized in South Park is that 25% of the worlds population are retards. I'm sure the SP creators threw that out for laughs in one of their episodes, but i'm starting to believe it is true.

It didn't happen to me. I have Ferrari factory mats in both my cars that are impossible to slip unless they are not on the factory pegs. It was a post on the Ferrari V12 board I copied.

The aftermarket, inch thick wool carpet mats that people throw in scare the crap out of me.

Ferrari has a pretty fool proof system incorporated into the factory mats.

The problem is fools aren't fool proof.

Sorry, should have said what you reported, not what happened to you.
But this brings up a good point. Don't most cars have pegs to lock down mats?
Of course, how many people even check unless they are cleaning up the car, or notice the mat slipping under the pedals.
I've been in rental cars where the mats were apparently just cleaned and just thrown on the floor in the approximate location where they should be.

I titled the post "From the Ferrari V12 board", but it was my bad I didn't put the post in quotations.

People often don't check the simplest things when they get in their cars, they just turn the key and drive off.

My buddy's wife had her Mercedes serviced at the dealership recently and they put in "nice plastic covers" over the mats and didn't take them out before returning the car to her. As she drove home, the cover mat slipped forward and when she pulled the car into the garage and the plastic mat slipped forward again resulting in her parking in the laundry room.

I think most pedal problems are caused by foreign objects like water bottles, floor mats, and other common crap sliding into the foot well than mechanical failures.

Yup, those are more common than loose mats I would think. I am sure those who don't perform regular upkeep on their cars run into that on occasion. But we can't recall all the naive and foolish drivers.

When I was a kid the car mats didn't have a hook or anything to hold them in place. They slipped around I'm sure. I never remember hearing about anyone having a car accident over it or smashing up the car pulling into the garage.

I've read stories of them bunching up under gas pedals before. Hardly a common problem. It seems floor mats were less flimsy back then too.

I think there is little doubt . . . Just think of all the people here on this Forum: about half have an intelligence below the average of the group-- no question about it.
