Canadian Operator To Deploy Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 Cable-Modem Gear

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 2/24/2009 1:27:35 PM MT
Shaw Communications is deploying DOCSIS 3.0-qualified cable-modem equipment from Motorola to support the Canadian operator's rollout of high-speed services at 100 Mbps.

Last week, Shaw began offering High-Speed Nitro service in Saskatchewan, providing up to 100-Mbps downloads -- the fastest residential Internet speeds available in North America -- using the channel-bonding capabilities of DOCSIS 3.0. The MSO also said existing broadband customers will experience a 50% or greater increase in speed.

The cable operator will use Motorola's BSR 64000 cable-modem termination systems with the TX32 Decoupled Downstream Modules. The TX32 provides 32 downstream QAM channels in a single slot. Shaw also is using Motorola's SurfBoard SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0-certified modems.

Shaw, based in Calgary, Alberta, serves 3.4 million customers, including 1.6 million broadband subscribers.

That is smoke'n. I didn't open the article but did they mention a price?? They offer up to 50mbps speed here through Comcast but it is like $125 a month ($70 for up to 30mbps).. I figured I would stick to my $25 a month 6mbps DSL until U-Verse was avaliable in my area..

Nope no mention of the price I am going to go and check out their site to see if it is listed there.

According to an announcement this morning by Canadian cable operator Shaw, the company is expanding the availability of their 100Mbps downstream, 5Mbps upstream "High-Speed Nitro" tier into Saskatchewan. Though the Shaw press release brags about braving a bad economy to offer "more value" for consumers, the 100Mbps offering is for now largely marketing fodder -- given it's unlikely that anyone facing financial struggles will be able to afford the tier's $249.95 per month Canadian ($204 U.S.) price tag. The "value" of the offering is also suspect, given the tier comes with a 200GB cap the company's website insists is "perfect for those who have multiple home computers and perform a variety of media-intensive activities at the same time."

That's the problem with Cable Internet. You will likely never get anywhere near the speed they say you should due to the shared nature of the system.

But even saying that.... 47.76 is hella fast.
