Homeless: I received 2 smartcards recently in the mail. My cottage up north has 2 receivers. They have mailed me others in the past and I just replace the existing with the new ones as per instructions. As far as I know everyone has a smartcard and needs one. It containes critical info for your receiver to work properly. When Bell makes changes it downloads to the card. You could have been told wrong info about the receiver not needing a card.
good luck

The 9242 HD PVR receivers and 6141 HD receivers do not have smart cards. These receivers are exceptions and are clearly marked on the instruction sheet included with the new smart cards.
Bell's FAQ page for smart cards also mention that these receivers do not require smart cards.

Just an update. HD and SD service stopped working in my home two nights ago, said I didn't have authorization or something like that. I put the new card in that bell sent me, called the phone number and was back up and running within ten minutes.
Maybe the HD receivers that didn't need cards previously do need them now... |

I had to do my 9200 HD PVR's as well as my 5100
the 9200 did not have a card before I did mine online one at a time without problems. you could do the ones at your cabin that way 1. put new cards in and leave them in till u get home to activate online.

Now BEV is replacing the model 6000 HD receivers as they cannot be upgraded to handle the MPEG 4. All the model 6100 and 9200 HD receivers did not require smartcards UNTIL this upgrade. I would think the new 6141 and 9240 HD receivers will not require a smart card until the major upgrade

Model 6000s are being replaced because they are not 8PSK capable. MPEG4 isn't the main consideration with this swap but these models are being replaced with 6131s or 6141s, MPEG4 capable boxes.
All model 6100 and 9200 receivers were provided new smartcards last year during the smartcard swap. They were required when signals were moved to the new encryption system. |

So whaty happens if you purchased your 6100's will Bell replace them to the new MPEG4 recievers for free or are we going to have to bend over and take as per usual.

No one ones at this moment, it is just too early to guess.
The thing to remember is that the 6000 will just plain NOT work after the switch to 8PSK, the 6100/9200 will still receive SD programming, so this could mean a different approach to a swap. |
