Hello: I've got a little problem, space. I need to place the TV over a gas fireplace and I want to keep it as low as possible for viewing. Any thoughts on what I should use, Plasma, LCD rear projection? has anyone done this and what were the results? Thanks.

Set must be protected from heat by a mantle or similar... do you have a built in alcove there to hold an LCD RPTV? They're about 18" deep...
Here's something to consider... if you have a masonary chimney, how will you run the power & signal cables to the TV? |

I have a Samsung DLP HLP5663 set in a wall unit installed over an electric fireplace. The set can be completely hidden when the unit doors are closed. You can view this in the High Def forum's link titled "High Definition Home Theater Photos" under "Rear Projection" HDTV. The electric fire place can produce heat equal to my old gas fireplace but we disable the heater when the set is in use. The advantage of electric over gas is you can enjoy the ethetics of a flame without using the heater.

In addition to the heat, the viewing angle should be considered. Any rear projection TV will have poor viewing from below. Sets could be tilted some, but many sets do not like to be tilted very much as it disturbs the heat removal. Infocus DLP RPTVs state no more than 15 degrees, for example. This tends to point toward a plasma because they don't have a viewing angle issue. But watch out for the heat! We installed a plasma behind a two way mirror on one installation above a fireplace and ran an A/C duct into the area with an exhaust fan to boot and it still gets pretty warm in front of the unit. We have installed plasmas over fireplaces and the mantle will do a pretty good job of shielding from the heat as Rsawdey suggested. Attachment can be tricky to brick and cableing can be a challenge.

That install behind the mirror sounds fantastic, SuperMod... they'll have to crank the brightness to compensate, but if they can afford that install they can afford to replace the plasma when it burns in... Champagne taste & champagne budget! (I'm more a beer budget guy).
That wireless transmitter that Cass had in the news recently would help a lot with installs like this, but you've still got to drag the power thru that masonry somehow... that's GOT to be pricey! Electronics aside, what did that install cost with it's A/C ducts & all? |

There is minimal picture degradation from our 56" Samsung DLP rear projection over our electric fireplace provided you are watching from a distance of 10 feet or more.

I would be hard pressed to say with any accuracy. It was part of a job that included a total of 8 plasmas, telephone system, computer network, computers, alarm system (we subcontracted that out) and HD satellite with internet. The A/C contractor installed the ductwork and the cabinet maker installed the mirror and alcove.
Edit: I found a digital photo made at completion: ![]() On the left there is a plasma behind the large door. The door is raised when the TV is turned on.
To the right there is a 50" plasma behind the mirror above the fireplace. The windows were heavily draped later. Last edited by rbinck; 04-07-2005 at 10:13 AM. |
