The service they have been offering the general public hasn't been all that stellar, with non competitive rates, tons of black-out areas, slow speed and disruptions. The idea sounded grand at the beginning, with talk about free open wifi in the downtown core and progressively adding to the area as services and business starting signing on, now it looks like they want to bail. Toronto Hydro Telecom Inc., was effectively put on the auction block yesterday in response to interest shown by potential buyers in recent months.

Along with its Wifi network, Toronto Hydro Telecom also has an extensive fibre-optic network in downtown Toronto. Another potential selling point: The company owns the lampposts in the city, which could come in handy for installing wireless equipment.
