Canadian TV via Satellite to Ohio

My current cable provider is Time Warner. Soon I'll be forced into buying an HD TV and reexamining the network of computers, TV's, and speakers I've strung throughout the house over the years.

I'm only about 75 miles across Lake Erie from Canada and would love to get some of their TV news programs... in English. I've heard that the way to do this is to go to Canada, buy the hardware (and I really don't know what I need), buy a Canadian service provider, then set up the hardware to point to the Canadian satellite. Whether or not giving a hotel address would meet the constraints of the law is questionable. In fact... I don't even know what laws are involved. I assume there's some legislation preventing those programs from coming over here because it's awfully strange to be so close and never see a program. I'm a news junky and really would like to get their programs.

Can anyone steer me inthe right direction please?

If its news you want, the first choice would be to see if you can get free, Over The Air broadcasts. That right away leads you to specifics, like how far away are you from HD broadcasters, what your elevation is, what power they are transmitting, etc.. One problem is, in Canada, most OTA broadcasts are low power. Coincidently the cable companies also own the OTA broadcasters, so they have no real incentive to give a good strong free signal, and the government lets them get away with it, and keep their license.

I am told there are 10s of thousands of US subscribers to Canadian satellite TV and I bet you can find them a forum for them on the web.
