Post Schwarzenegger's visit to Canada brings legislation to the fore

Looks like Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger extracted a few favours out of PM Harper, one of which is the promise to change legislation that will not allow so called 'Cam Movies', not that this a big issue on the streets and Canada certainly isn't the hotbed of theatre copies that the press has been making out, look to NY & LA for that.

Key points:

* The recording of a movie in a movie theatre without the consent of the theatre's manager.
* The recording of a movie in a movie theatre without the consent of the theatre's manager for the purpose of selling, renting, or other commercial distribution of a copy of the recording.

Under the new bill, the first offence could draw up to two years in jail, and the second, a penalty of up to five years.

Disturbing stats seem to be very one sided... Check out http://www.michaelgeist.ca/ for his blog of the one sided viewpoint and the power of "The Swartz"

I can't understand why someone would want to waste a movie by watching a cam version anyway.

Cam movies are offered for sale on the streets by fly-by-night vendors (usually 4 to 6 for $20) and as long as the cover image is good.. they sell like hotcakes. The buyers are encouraged to pick them up by their offspring.. saving a rental return in their busy schedule.

Reading a quote the other day by a famous author who was disgusted by 'empty hollywood flics' filling minds full of nothing. Reminded me of the lack of respect for visual communication and the beauty of life through the eyes of others, and the rich details HD brings into a world of empty minds full of nothing.

More important to this is the agreement on stem cell research and the environmental improvements they are to work on who really cares about the movie side of this agreement.

I wish when these programs are discussed by the media they would say whether they are talking about adult stem cells, umbilical chord stem cells, embryonic stem cells, etc. They really are very different areas of research, but the media seems to lump them all into a single category, I guess to soften the embryonic stem cell debate. There are many successful treatments utilizing adult stem cells in use today, but as far as I know none yet for the others.

You are correct and I think it is the reason you mention to soften the debates and get people to accept it by not having to think about all forms of the research and just picture the adult research.

Post Behind the scenes account of how HollyWood pulled this off.

http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/223795

It's a sad day when Canadians let foreign business write their laws behind closed doors... and get them passed! Some movie premieres open with a police search of all bags (looking for cams), but enforcement is going to be joke and thankfully they didn't get what they really wanted (US style DRM).

Distributors Association president Douglas Frith one year earlier, at which Frith provided the government with draft legislation – legislation that the lobby group itself had crafted – that likely served as the basis for what is now Bill C-59. Existing legislation could have handled this, there is enough rules on the books to prevent Cams and distribution.

Quoting one user on Slash: "Stephen Harper is so far up George Bush's ass that he can almost see Tony Blair's feet."

http://politics.slashdot.org/article...50200&from=rss

Don't vote for Harper.
