Post Canada's about to have a copyright disaster

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/11...ut_to_hav.html

eeps.. time to warm up your word processor and let them know!

Canadian Press excerpt from Toronto's Metro, January 11, 2007,
http://www.metronews.ca/story.aspx?id=23834

Ever taped or PVRed a show so that you can watch it later, otherwise known as time shifting?

Or ripped a CD so you could listen to it on your MP3 player, called format shifting?

With changes to Canada’s copyright laws expected as early as next month, these mundane 21st century activities could theoretically be open to prosecution - unless the Conservative government steps in with expanded "fair use" or "fair dealing" protections for consumers.

Close observers of the file say all signs point to a new regime that will improve safeguards for major music, film and media companies and artists for unpaid use of their material, but neglect to make exemptions for personal use of copyrighted content.

Consumer advocates like Ottawa-based lawyer Howard Knopf are urging the federal government to protect Canadians with wide exemptions in the Copyright Act for "fair use."

If you a bit of time and feel this issue is important to your quality of life.
Here's a link for other things you can do.

You can commit murder too... it's when you get caught. You might think this stuff is trivial, but lawyers are expensive, and if you think that's absurd. Check out the cases our brethren south of the border have to endure, the DRM Nazi's don't stop because it's only an mp3 player.

Well we will cross that bridge when we come to it I guess LOL. Not only that but in Canada an electronic petition hold little to no value it has to be paper based and have actual signatures.

Intellectual property must be protected or the professional entertainment industry will slowly die.

Do you know anyone who wants to work for nothing? Do you know anyone who wants to invest his money in a losing enterprise?

Fair use in this case means you have the right to buy something that is limited to your personal use on your personal devices. That's all that the new legislation is intended to do. If an item offered for sale with these restrictions doesn't suit your personal preferences or equipment, then you don't have to buy it. It's a free market.

If we don't have DRM, we won't have a professional entertainment industry, and we'll have nothing new to watch but Bob-next-door's vacation video and Martha's daughter singing off-tune.

Do any of you know of any viable alternate to DRM? ... Yes, I know, there's the "trust me" system. Well, if you want to see how well that works in our modern society, set up a fruit shop out on the street, in front of your house, with a scale and the fruit clearly priced and a basket for people to put their money into and make change. Then you'll see how well that DRM-free system works.

Cheers, Don.

The industry in its current form may have to change, yes, but it isn't going anywhere.

We already live in a DRM-free world with the current redbook audio CD and DVDs that even grandmothers can figure out how to copy. The music industry is doing relatively well, considering how badly they treat their customers and content creators and movie industry is bailing out of the DVD market to move to HDDVD/Bluray in hopes their copy protection is stronger (already cracked, oops).

It honestly doesn't matter what copy protection they put on a disk it is going to be hacked and relativley easily as has been proven by the current HD DVD and BRD hacks and it only took how long this time.
