Buying a HD-PVR online...

How can I be sure it will work with my local cable provider (Shaw) in Alberta??

You can't.

Shaw, like other providers, could have retailers selling their DVR's, under license, and these machines are then listed in the Shaw service. Upon activation, the serial number is verified and conditions acceptance before the assignment of a user IP address.

If a Shaw DVR is offered on eBay or by an individual and specified as having been used for Shaw, that is something else.
