If you can see one...
The general answer is that if your TV has digital display, it should. If it has analog display, the picture should be about the same. Don't forget that each TV input requires calibration... they are not adjusted the same way. In addition to Contrast, brightness and sharpness, in the same menu you should have Color Temperature selection of: Cool, Medium and Warm. And the choice to make could be different depending on the input.

In general the answer is no, you will not usually see any difference between HDMI and component in a correctly adjusted TV. There are multiple conversions and processing involved in getting the signal to the TV whether the TV is "digital" or "analog". Some people have reported worse PQ using HDMI than using component.

My experience (extensive) has revealed to me that there is a picture quality difference with HDMI over component. Of course this seems to depend on the T.V. model/brand and the model/brand of DVD player/SAT receiver.

Most people believe they see an improvement of PQ using HDMI over component. The main advantage is that it cuts down the number of cables going from the STB to the set i.e. one instead of five and it keeps everything in the digital domain as component cables are analogue.
I changed my component to a DVI connection which carries only digital video and there was a slight improvement to the digital and HD channels and a noticeable improvement on the analogue channels which I find quite puzzling. (to my mind, it should be the other way round!) |

My personal experience using a cheap Westinghouse 32" LCD, which has only 1 DVI digital input, the digital input has quite a noticeble improvement (from both Cable and DVD inputs,) over the component analogue input.
I am using a HDMI splitter box from BB to connect 1. Rogers HD box for cable, ( DVI output); and 2. a upconverting DVD player ( HDMI output, analogue sound to a reciever); both to the single DVI input on the TV. I have tried both Cable and DVD thru components input to compare, and the pictures are softer and has more artifacts. Check out TV reviews at CNET.com, they sometimes mention the digital and analogue input performance of their test subjects. |

If choosing between them, keep in mind that everything is moving to HDMI and, in the future, your HD viewing through component connections may be curtailed.

HDMI ( which carries digital video and audio signals in one single cable) and DVI ( which carries only digital video signals in one single cable) in theory should be better quality. Component (three cables, video only) on the other hand sends an analogue signal which your tv must convert to digital. The less conversion that takes place is your best bet. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Again this depends on your tv set, conversion capabilities, etc.
