Default New Owner and new to shaw terminal

I just ordered a xbr 46 piano black. I can't wait it's coming this week. Until now I only used the basic cable and never had a terminal. I bought the basic HD terminal already without the pvr. Do you think there is a huge difference between the dvi from HD terminal and HDMI from the PVR HD terminal?

Also, I got it from futureshop but should I return and get it from shaw? They will give a free installation I think.

First off, congrats on your new set! The DVI vs HDMI pq difference is an on-going debate. Apparently, HDMI has a better bandwith for improved video quality as well as being able to handle multi-channel audio. In your case, with the tv you will be getting, I would consider choosing the pvr with HDMI. I, however, am just using the Componet out to my set becasue it only has one HDMI and I'm using it for my upscaling dvd player, but, my tv is also only a 30" tube, which you will notice virtually no difference between those two connections. To be honest, I would suggest exchanging the non-pvr for the pvr. When I first bought one back in July, I didn't think I would use it that much, as I never did alot of recording, but once I got more comforable experimenting with all its functions, I find it invaluble. Prime-time television is when you want it to be! Watch what you want when you want, and fast-forward through all the commercials is well worth it in my opinion. Hope this helps, enjoy!

I will definitely consider that even though it will be around $200 more for the PVR version and also I will have to get a HDMI cable which will probably be around $100. So when I get the HDMI cable, do I not use the RED, BLUE, Green, cables at all? Just use the co-ex cable from the wall to the tv and to the box. And then the HDMI cable? That's it?

Also, If i also want the home theatre to be HDMI with the tv, I will need to get ANOTHER HDMI cable?

Wow it's hurting my wallet seriously.

By the way, for the PVR, how does it just fast forward commercials like that? So basically I can watch anything on the day's schedule at any time?
What if a sport's game is on?

Does it matter what brand the HDMI cables are? and say if I don't go with the pvr, should I at least get a DVI cable? or should I get that DVI-HDMI cable which will have the same quality as HDMI.

You can run your coax to pvr hdmi to tv,then you only need a digial audio connection, either orange rca or fibre optic cable to home theatre.Try an electronic surplus store,I picked up a 6' fibre opic cable (toshiba) for $22,and a HDMI for $45,you don't need that Monster stuff.Good Luck and enjoy your new toy.

xbr_46,
ecat Is right, you won't need an additional HDMI cable. The signal will come from the wall outlet directly into the cable box, then out from the cable box via the HDMI or DVI to your tv, with a separate optical or coaxial digital out to your receiver. If you don't get the pvr, a DVI-HDMI adapter cable will do fine. Any brand name should be fine for DVI or HDMI. In terms of fast-forwarding on the pvr, it will allow you ONLY on titles you have already pre-recorded earlier. There are different speeds of FF as well, you can speed through ads in a couple seconds flat. While watching live television, you can only pause and rewind to the point you started watching that particular program. With 2 tuners, you will be able to record 2 programs at the same time, if necassary, and watch a third you have pre-recorded.
