What is HD?

Hi all,
I finally jumped aboard the HDTV/EDTV bandwagon today by purchasing a Samsung 42" EDTV, and I absolutely love it! I have a few questions though. FYI, I'm on Rogers Cable in Canada and have the 3250 box. 1) I've heard conflicting reports - what's better? A DVD player w/ progressive scan OR a High Definition DVD Player (the ones that upconvert and have HDMI out's). 2) I'm trying to optimize the non-HD digital cable quality. A friend of mine showed me a hidden HDTV setup wizard in the box (by pressing Guide and Info while it's off). Anyone heard of this feature and the best settings to enter? 3) VGA connector on the TV is strange. Figured it would be no problem plugging in my computer to the TV. When I tried, I realized that the VGA connector on the TV is different from the cable I have. The cable has 2 rows of pins, whereas the TV has 3 rows. Any thoughts? 4) Burn in. I'm obsessed with trying to not get burn in. I turned on pixel shift and told it to move 4 pixels horizontally and vertically every minute. I don't notice any shift at all. Is this normal? Just a few other notes of mention: -digital box doesn't have HDMI, goes into the TV via component -DVD goes into the TV via component -audio out from TV goes into home theatre system -watched the Lion King DVD and it looks unreal!! That's it for now, I'll probably have more later. Your thoughts? Thanks |

Well, first you do not have an HD TV so you would be better off with a Prgressive scan DVD player as your set can not display any HD. Upconversion would not do any good either.
As far as finding an HD set up wizard, well again your set can only display 480p so HD is irrelevant. If your set is LCD then you do not have to worry about burn in. Do not know what set you have though. Hope this helps a bit. |

Dido on everthing Shosh said about HD vs ED. About the VGA connection. VGA/SVGA uses a 15 pin (3 row) connection and the cable is as well. I believe a older style 9 pin (2 row) is also used. I think you need the same dapter on both ends, so see if you have a 15 pin laying around (they are quite cheap). What it the model of your video card? Does it have a 9 or 15 pin connection?
