Default Why doestn't Shaw carry more channels?

So, from other threads I understand there are over 20 HD channels in Canada.

Here in Vancouver, there are 10 (free) HD channels on Shaw. Now, I assume that at least some of the other channels are local channels across the country that broadcast in HD, and I'm not totally choked that I can't get those.

But come on... no Discovery HD? Why wouldn't they carry a national channel like that (they already carry 3 or 4 non-HD Discovery Channels)?

How does this work? Do they have to pay a tonne of money to Discovery for showing it? If so, that doesn't seem like a great move on Discovery's part, since they're a commercial-showing channel.

Is it bandwidth? If so, does that mean I'll never get more than 10 HD channels with Shaw?

with Bell ExpressVu there is 29 HD channels but some will require a monthly fee in the near future. Shaw is too cheap I guess.

This may not mean much, but when I activated my HD+PVR receiver a couple weeks ago, Shaw told me that some more hd channels were coming this fall. She didn't specify how many, or what they would be, but I'm also hoping they aquire Discovery hd as well. I really miss Expressvu, but had to give it up when I moved into my new place. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Default Shaw has more HD channels

I was looking at Shaw's HD guide last night (in Vancouver), and shaw has added 2 more HD channels: Discovery HD (YAY!!!) and CTV East for you time-shifters out there.

Here's the catch: There are now 2 tiers of HD channels...HD Basic, and HD Plus.

HD Basic is ABC, CBS, NBC, CBC, CTV West, Movie Central, Fox, and PBS, and it is free to all those with Digital Cable

HD Plus includes the 2 new channels, and will include TSN HD and Sportsnet HD. These 4 channels will be free previews until September 26. It looks like we'll have to pay for HD sports and the new channels after 9/26/06.

No pricing yet on Shaw's site.
