Take a look at this web site for some help:
http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx

It will give you a reasonable indication if it is possible.

If you receive any of the following analogue stations OTA in Barre, you should also be able to pick up their digital broadcasts: WVER (ch 28), WVTA (ch 41), WLED (ch49), WCFE (ch 57). Not a lot of variety since they are all PBS. They are broadcasting digitally on channels 9, 24, 48 and 38 respectively. (Note that the programming on WVER and WVTA is identical since they are both VPT).

None of the commercial stations in the Plattsburgh-Burlington are are yet broadcasting digitally but that will change by autumn 2006.

- I see that info here a lot - are those CADTV local HD unencrypted signals trapped out for all but Digital subscribers or do they get through for cable modem users - I'm pretty sure they aren't on the coax for analog subscribers. - I get good OTA HD but I'd like to do a comparison.

It's called OTA. No compression or simsubbing. True, you can't record it,
you can but a 500 GB HDDVR with OTA ATSC tuner (30 hours of HD) costs $800-$1000 but then -I paid that much for each of my first 2 VCRs (a Sony betamax and a RCA VHS -- and I don't regret it)

Default Sony DHG HDD500 works on tightwad cable

I hooked up my new Sony DHG HDD500 to the comcast analog cable and I get lots of digital sd channels music and all the cable CAHDTV (subchn's 1 only) for all the local OTA HD (7) stations + of course all the OTA antenna signals - Looks like my antique zenith HDTV tuner wasn't QAM compatible. - This is way too much toy for a basic analog cable cheapskate. -
Should have read 60 hours of HD instead of 30 hours in my previous post-

Ya OTA if fine and all but to be brutally honest the HD package on my cable plan was only $5-7 extra a month. Granted i still have an OTA antenna to get FOX (basically only got it for Football games but ive found im using it alot more ) but having Discovery,INHD, INHD2,HDnet,HDmovies,HBOhd, TNT, and ESPN is worth paying the small extra charge to me. Especially TNT and ESPN when the NBA playoffs come rolling around. For me since I bought my tv mainly for viewing sports and movies, im satisfied with my cable service.

Default Dallas area

My apartment supplies basic cable and I pay the difference for expanded. Before I bought my new HDTV, I went to the Comcast web site and seen it was going to cost me an extra five bucks a month for HD and a STB or cable card. Once my TV was delivered, I hooked up the cable and bang! HD. No STB or card. I've since learned that if a cable co. re-broadcast network channels (ABC, NDC, ETC) they can not block them! I went ahead and had the card installed. I get fewer channels with it! The box or card will block channels that are not scrambled in order to get you to pay for them!
I get all those worthless music channels, DIY, NFL, etc. I even get some of the on demand stuff when it locks on. Now, if I want HBO, ETC, I have to have a card or STB, but since I don't want any of the pay channels, I’ll just let the cable co. keep their card and I’ll keep my five dollars a month plus extra channels! Now before someone thinks I doing something illegal, the cable co. has been out four times already trying to get ESPN HD and Discovery HD to work (no luck’ another reason I’m keeping the card) and has zero issues with me getting these HD channels without their card or STB

In the GTA area using a good external antenna, you should pick up the following OTA channels:
Here is a list of the OTA HD channels currently available in the Toronto area.

14-1 (29-1) Fox WUTV 29 Buffalo
20-1 (5-1) CBC CBLT 5 Toronto
24-1 (25-1) CBC (F) CBLFT 25 Toronto
32-1 (23-1) UPN WNLO 23 Buffalo
33-1 (2-1) NBC WGRZ 2 Buffalo
38-1 (7-1) ABC WKBW 7 Buffalo
39-1 (4-1) CBS WIVB 4 Buffalo
40-1 (9-1) CTV CFTO 9 Toronto
43-1 PBS WNED 17 Grand Island / Buffalo
53-1 Citytv CITY 57 Toronto
66-1 Sun TV CKXT 52 Toronto

The only benefit to Rogers is the sports and movie channels for which you need "packages" so they aren't cheap.

I'm in Thornhill (Bayview N. of Steeles) and I'm using a chimney mounted CM4228 and a Winegard AP4700 Pre-Amp (which may not be necessary).
BTW -- I looked at the SANYO early this year, but my wife said the screen was too small, so I went for a plasma. But the price is great at Walmart for the SANYO. Another reason, the set is heavy -- (tube) and I had no way of getting it home from Walmart.
My antenna is here is in attached picture.
