Liquidd,

There are HD channels in Minot & Fargo -- but I think you are too far. My measurements take you about 225 miles from each location.

Fargo has KVLY, KFME, KVRR and WDAY. Minot has KMOT, KXMC, KSRE, and KMCY.

Intrac,

How are you calculating your distance as the crow flies?

Thanks,
Reza

I use lat & long between the receiving location and the transmitters with information on the FCC web site to calculate distance. It also tells me the possible signal level, which in the Winnipeg instance, is too low to be useful.

In response to the question of why pay? - Simple..

I pay for all the other non-HD Channels that I don't get. The HD Material really doesn't cost me anything more since I have a DVR - The DVR is my cost and HD is included in it. I also get more channels over the cable than OTA. INHD1, INHD2, HBO and a couple others that don't have good enough signals for over the air.

mshulman,

You are missing the point. You can get excellent HD, without paying for it. It's called OTA. No compression or simsubbing. True, you can't record it, and all you get this way are the Networks and locals, but this is where most of the viewing is, except for the specialty channels.

I'm not missing the point. I know you can get it OTA. Depending on where you live however, you may not get a great signal. Even if you do, there are some channels that are not available OTA. So while you can get some HD OTA, you are still missing out a bit.

IF all you ever watch is HD and you resign yourself to never watch SD again, then OTA would be fine and save you a ton, since any service that includes HD is probably at least $50. If you already have cable though, then paying the small extra for the HD content is worth it as well.

In my area, I can get HD-OTA:
NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, UPN, WB, PBS
plus 2 Cdn. HD stns -- all OTA with more coming this year.

Assuming you have a clear shot, (no mountains in between), you should be able to get OTA from the U.S. If you are able to pick up analog channels via an outside antenna, you have a good chance of picking up the Digital channels.

The following U.S. stations are within 110 miles from you:
KCPQ - 18 in Tacoma, KTWB - 25 in Seattle, KONG - 31 in Seattle, PAX - 32 in Bellevue, KSTW - 36 in Tacoma, KOMO - 38 in Seattle, KIRO - 39 in Seattle, KCTS - 41 in Seattle, KHCV - 44 in Seattle, KING - 48 in Seattle.
These stations are about 20-30 miles: CITY - 47 in Vancouver, CHEK - 43 in Victoria, CIVT - 33 in Vancouver.

I don't know all the status -- i.e. running at full or low power, etc. available only on calbe/satellite, or OTA.

Can I use an HD Satellite receiver like Bell 6100 purely for OTA reception? I don't want to subscribe to their infamous service.

3deal,

I believe you can -- if you have the 8VSB module. I don't think you have to subscribe for it to be active.

There is a good probability that you should get the following US HD channels:
WFFF in Burlington, Ch. 43, Approx. 80 mi S.E.;
WCFE in Plattsburgh, Ch. 38, Approx 60 mi S.W:
WETK in Burlington, Ch. 32, Approx. 80 mi S.E;

All the rest are CDN HD channels either now on the air or coming on shortly.
