Default Bell 9200:480p output better than the 1080i?

Hello All,
My friend recently got his 9220 system hooked up and after the tech guys left he noticed that they left the output signal in the set-up menu at 480p. Puzzled by this, he went to change it to 1080i, the picture quality substantially dropped, and when he set it back to 480p the picture looked much better again. He is using a 43" Projection Samsung HDTV via component, I wonder if anyone else has noticed this, if so, did Bell maybe switch the resolution output labels by mistake? He called them after he noticed it, but hasn't heard anything back lately. Thanks for any feed-back.
Marty.

Default Picture quality of HD 1080i

There is a huge contrast between 480p and 1080i. Something is not right. Were you actually tuned to an HD channel?

Yes, and sorry, I should have specified that the tech guys left the output signal on the HD-PVR at 480p, not the t.v. itself. This is the case on any channel he turns to, hd or not. Maybe because it's an older hd set, that has no DVI or HDMI inputs?
My roommate has the exact same HD-PVR connected to his 42" LCD Grand Vega via a DVI-HDMI adapter cable with no problem having 1080i selected.

Make sure the input you're using is rated for HDTV signals & not just 480i/p for DVD. Depending on the type of TV (model?) you may have better luck with 720p. The Wega LCD RPTV, for example, has a native res of 1366 x 768p/60 so it should use 720p/60.

His set does have specific component inputs which can handle either an dvd connection (480P) and one that will handle the 1080i signal specifically and we do have that one properly connected to the HD-PVR. However, I don't think his set has 720P, I'll have to double check. But thanks for the info regarding the rez on my roommates LCD Grand Wega, I'll definately be checking into that.

Marty1080i,

When I read your initial post, it is not clear if your friend has changed to an HD channel broadcasting an HD program (16:9),to test the 1080i resolution, or if he's remaining on a SD channel. Makes a whole lot of difference in trying to understand his problem.

UPDATE:
Better late than never I suppose. While trying to accertain the 480p vs 1080i problem, he was definately tuned to an HD16:9 channel. However, he called me last week and said that when he decided to change the receiver from DUAL to SINGLE mode, and not use the second t.v. set up in the bedroom, the picture quality apparently got much better. He now says that HD looks like it should now. For whatever reason, not running the signal to the second set, made a difference. Go figure.
