Default rogers digital cable recorders - how much room on hard drive?

i just purchased the Rogers Explorer 8000HD PVR Digital Cable Box. However it is still on order.

my question concerns the hard drive and how much room is available on it; does 160GB allow me to store lots of movies or is some type of alternate device needed?

i was more interested in the pause live tv features.

thanks for the info

The SA8000HD has a 160 Gb HDD. Records 20 hours of HD and 100 hours of SD.

If you wish to see technical info in detail, at the STB, press and maintain pressure on the "Select" button until the email light comes on then press the "Info" button. Then you can use the "page + or -" button on the remote to flip the 22 pages. When you are done, press the remote's "Exit" button.

Does this tuner work with analog cable or just digital? I'm getting a Plasma w/o a tuner, and wonder if the SA8000HD will work with my basic cable subscription.

The SA8000HD is a cable box/DVR using QAM and needs the provider's digital signals.

My provider, Videotron in Montreal, gives digital signals for all channels. In most cases, the analog channels from 2 to 69 have different numbers compared to their digital twins.

I can access analog channels by first bringing the cable to antenna 1 of the TV (the upper input) then installing a cable from the second cable position at the TV's back panel, which is an output, to the STB/DVR cable input then a cable from the STB/DVR cable output to the third antenna port (antenna 2), which is an input, at the TV's back panel. I've tested that but I have no need for it since all my channels at the STB are digital.

You'll find it fills up rather quick if your saving movies and regular tv shows and to my knowlage the vcr outputs are disabled.

If anyone knows when they'll be enabled or if you can hook it up to a DVD recorder, I'd love to know.

Yes and no, you'll get the basic digital package instead and 12 HD channels will be included, but I believe the price will be the same.

The SA8000HD carries a 160Gb HDD which is good for 20 hours of HD. Each hour represents approximately 4% of the HDD capacity (depending on the amount of data...action, colors, etc).

Here in Montreal the option "Copy to VCR" has been there all along. In fact It copies via the cable from the DVR. To copy from a DVD instead of VCR requires the DVD recorder to have a cable input and output.

TV programs I erase after playback. Movies I keep to playback and invite family members to see, if they want, then erase. I seldom have more than 59% of the HDD used. What I do keep for long periods is the Rudy Maxa visits to Cities of Europe (PBSHD). I have Venice, Florence, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Milan and Lake Como, and others.

The internal NTSC tuner is for analog cable. Certain Plasma and LCD displays are designed as EDTV's using format 480p. Others are HDTV capable and some are HDTV ready with an ATSC (for digital) tuner. The latter can be used for OTA reception of local HD programs. For cable or satellite service, the HDTV ready is good enough. Some satellite providers can supply a STB which can also capture OTA signals.

For digital cable you need a setup box to unscramble the data. A cable provider may arrange to do this with different STB manufacturers and would normally chose one only. If you select a cable provider who uses Scientific Atlanta STB's then you could request a SA8000HD which becomes the STB and the DVR in one box.
