To make life easier for the wife when it come to electronics and to preserve the life of my receiver, here's my deal:
The Directv HR-22 has one HDMI output; however, I want to use a simple passive HDMI splitter (male input split into two female output) to do the following: 1. Male end of the passive HDMI Splitter into my Directv HR-22 receiver. 2. a. One female end of the passive HDMI Splitter into a 3 ft HDMI cable that will plug into my Onkyo HT-S6100 receiver/surround sound. The receiver will then be plugged into the first HDMI input of my 42" LG LCD TV. The receiver is an HDMI upscaling receiver, not just a pass through-I use HDMI cables to send both audio and video to my Surround sound receiver. b. The other female end of the passive HDMI Splitter into a 3 ft HDMI cable that will plug directly into the second HDMI input of my 42" LG LCD TV. Basically what I am trying to do is to have the single HDMI output from the Directv Receiver split to go to (1) my home theatre receiver then to the TV HDMI input 1 and (2) directly to my tv HDMI input 2. I am not splitting the original HDMI source (from the Directv Receiver) to two separate TVs to display at the same time. I'm sending the signal to one TV-one directly and one indirectly so that I can simply change the input on the TV if I want to watch Directv with the surround sound on or without the surround sound on. The signal will never be drawn from both sides of the splitter at the same time. Do you follow me? I heard that depending on the devices hooked up you will lose audio or the picture would be degraded. I've looked into the obivious solution, a HDMI switcher, but they are rather expensive and I really don't need another device on my entertainment stand. Does anybody know if this will truly work and what the possible consequences or audio/video problems are? Any answers out there? Thank you in advance for your help! |

Here you go (I think)...
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 1 other option would be to also connect the DTV box to the TV via component video and analog audio. Then just switch to that input when you only want to hear it via the TV speakers..

worst case scenario I will go with component cables, but I'm trying to minimize the cables by using HDMI cables and maintaining full HD picture. will these passive splitters actually work if the signal is only sent to one device at a time and not both? I've seen some mixed reviews, but most people are just trying to get multiple displays and supposedly it doesn't work most of the time.

Roger on the minimize.... For you application, that splitter should work fine.. But for only $12, not a biggie if it doesn't...

Why not use optical cable to the 6100 from the HD-22 and run HDMI to TV

I would use optic, but optic audio cables only transmit 5.1 signal and I want the full 7.1 signal.

supposedly 5.1 is all that an optic cable is capable of transmitting.

Really? I did not know that. So when I have my Receiver set on the ProLogic II sound mode and it plays my audio from the HR-22 on all 7 speakers, thats not true 7.1? Does it duplicate the signal from another pair of speakers (such as the frount two) or what?
Is it still true that optic cable only carries a 5.1 signal? |
