Default Hooking up a VCR to a 722?

I've just upgraded my older 522 with a brand new 722. I had my VCR hooked up through coax cables. I've noticed that the back of the 522 had a "cable TV in" that is not on the 722. The tech @ Dish said that I must now use RCA cables to hook it up. I cannot believe that there is not a way to use coax with this new receiver. Any help would be appreciated.

Why would you hook up a VCR to a DVR?

Then just connect the VCR to the TV.

Sounds like you did not have the 522 hooked up the way it should be, never use coax to hook up anything when you have A/V inputs on the TV. Your 522 should be hooked up with A/V (red, white and yellow or S) and same with VCR.

I've now used the A/V hookup and everything is cool.

I had it hooked up with coax before so I could move the programs off the 522's hard drive and save them to VHS tape. (the external hard drive (USB) will not work with the 522) It taped everything great even though it did take a lot of time.

You should have used A/V cables from 522 to VCR for that also

I've re-done it correctly now. Works great. Thanks.

What exactly is coax used for? It goes from outside dish (one coax) into a Dish splitter into my DVR. Is this the only time it should be used?

The coax from the dish goes into a separator on the back of your 722, it is NOT a splitter
They have an RF out marked home distribution output ch 21-69, It is for a second TV in some other room. but is only SD.
All outputs(red, white yellow and S/ componet red green blue and HDMI) will work better than coax. Only componet (red, green and blue) HDMI are for HD

I'm real happy that the VCR now works. It does only when I use the composites (Red, White, yellow) but WILL NOT WORK at all when I use either the Components or the S-Video along with the toslink for sound. No picture, no sound! Is there something else I need to switch or turn on/off with the HDTV or VCR??

(My Dish 722 would not work with the Components/toslink combo either. The HDMI works just fine.

I am not sure how you have things hooked up, what do you have the toslink hooked to.?
Your 722 can be hooked to TV with component (red, blue and green) then you need red and white for sound or HDMI alone
The VCR should use (red, white and yellow or S) to TV
If you want to record on VCR, feed (red white yellow or S) from 722 to input on VCR No need for any Toslink in this set up, VCR does not have toskink and TV does not have a toslink input.Sounds like you want to use component and toslink to feed 722 to TV, will not work, TV does not have toslink input.

You're right on it! I did not realize that the toslink would not work. (The TV has an out not an in) Why it worked earlier was because I still had the coax connected and that is what was producing the sound that I wrongly assumed was the toslink connection. It all good now and I really have no need of taping anything. Just to simply play older tapes. Thanks so much for your wisdom & help.
