Connect the Xbox with HDMI and the cable box with component.

OR

If you want to use component for both, get a switch.

Does your HD box have HDMI or DVI output? If so, connect it to your TV via HDMI (or HDMI-DVI cable, if the box has DVI output).

I just hooked up my Xbox 360 to my 50" Samsung HD Plasma TV using the HD connecters. And after I hooked it up I made sure on the wire there is TV and HDTV, I made sure HDTV is selected and hooked up the other end to the TV, (color for color) and I got a better picture, BUT THEN, I get a better picture when I went into the Xbox main menu's and change my Display settings to 720p. It depends on what you change it to depending on ur TV, my TV is HD 720p. And some are 1080i or 1080p.
