Default A possible HDMI cable problem?

I'm not able to get sound and picture to work at the same time for a DVD player connected to a brand-new Yamaha HTR-6140 receiver.

I bought cheaper cables for $12 each but I don't think that's the problem because all cables work when I connect them directly from DVD player to the HDTV.

Also, I have a cable box with HDMI that works fine connected through the receiver (Even if I connect it to the DVD input into the receiver, suggesting that the problem is not the receiver).

When I play a DVD with the HDTV turned off or disconnected from the HDMI output of the receiver, I hear the sound through my speakers. But when the HDTV is turned on and connected to the HDMI output of the receiver, I get nothing but a little flickering here and there on the screen and no sound.

Does this sound like a cable issue or is there something wrong with my new receiver?

Wait, are you saying that if you have the dvd player hooked up to the receiver, andthe receiver hooked up to the tv, you get sound out of the receiver only when the tv is off? And then as soon as you turn the tv on, you get no sound at all?

You're absolutely correct, Admo.

Very strange. My only guess is that the copy protection on the dvd's is preventing the audio and video from being played. But I would think that you would get no audio at all from the receiver.

I'd recommend hooking the dvd player direct to the tv via hdmi for video, and use an optical cable for audio, dvd player to receiver. You'll have to choose in the dvd player set-up that only video is to go through hdmi, and audio out via optical.
