Default Best Way to Hook Up PS3/Surround Sound/STB/TV

Okay I wasn't sure where to put this so please feel free to move it to wherever this belongs, but here goes..

I got a PS3 yesterday for my bday and I wanted to hook it up through our home theater surround sound thing to get surround sound when playing games and watching blu-rays. Well the SS only has 1 HDMI connection and 1 set of component connections. So I ran the HDMI from the PS3 to the tv (42" LG 1080P LCD (42LB5D)) and the red/white audio cables from the ps3 to the surround sound and set the ps3 not to output sound through the HDMI cable. Now with it setup this way, we will constantly have to switch out the audio cables between the cable box and the ps3 on the SS. This is a pain. There 2 solutions I see here. 1, run the HDMI from the ps3 to the SS and run component cables from the SS to the tv, OR i could buy a component cord for the ps3, run it to the SS and run and HDMI from the SS to the TV. Which would be best here? Or option 2, use an optical audio cable to and from either the cable box to the SS or the PS3 to the SS. What should I do? Are there any other better alternatives? Also which would give me the best PQ and SQ? Thanks everybody!

What is the model of the receiver??

Since it is HDMI (and as long as it is not HDMI passthrough), I would:

1. Connect the PS3 via HDMI to the receiver and receiver HDMI out to the TV. This will allow for DD 5.1/DTS and quite possibly Dolby True HD/DTS HD for BD movies. The red and white are kaka.. They don't support DD/DTS. Also with HDMI to the TV, you can use the TV speakers for sound if you don't want to crank up the SS receiver all the time for certain shows. Or just connect the associated RCA audio cables if you use component video for the same results.

2. Connect the the cable STB to the TV via HDMI or component video. Connect the STB digital optical (toslink) out to the SS receiver for sound. This will also allow for DD 5.1 for the programs and movies that broadcast in DD 5.1..

BTW.. Don't over spend on HDMI and othe A/V cables like monster. You can get high quality HDMI cable here and other places for around $7..

Our receiver is a Samsung HT-X50.

What is HDMI passthrough?

The first way is what id like to do but my reciever only has 1 HDMI output. So in and out is not an option. Is there an adapter I could buy that would give me more HDMI ports?

With option 2 how would hook up the ps3 for video and sound?

Could I maybe try running HDMI cables to the tv from both the STB and PS3 and an HDMI or digital optical cable output to the reciever for my sound?

And thanks for the link, you just saved me a bunch of money lol.

Sorry, I thought it had a HDMI in and out, not just 1 out and no in.

1 and 2 were not seperate option but what I would do for both the PS3 and STB together. But since no HDMI input, that puts a cabosh on #1. And since you only have 1 digital optical input, you can only hook up 1 device digitally. My vote would be for the PS3. Just hook up the PS3 to the TV via HDMI and optical to the receiver. Make sure to set optical as the output in the PS# audio settings. Then connect the STB to the TV via HDMI or componnent video (depending on how many HDMI's you have). Connect the STB to the receiver via RCA red and white or:
You can also get a manual toslink switch like this 1 and switch between the 2 devices with the receiver you have know. Only around $10 shipped.

Other options would be to get a new SS system with more digital inputs. Let me know if this is an option and your price range.

The HDMI out from the receiver is for the built in DVD player with the Samsung. If you are just going to use your PS3 as you BD/DVD player, not needed. But if you want to use it, simply connect the HDMI out to the TV as well..

Okay here's what I did for now, I hooked up the ps3 to the tv via HDMI and the STB via component and rca red/white cables, then another set of rca red/white cables from the tv to the receiver. So this way the tv outputs all sound through the receiver depending on which tv input is selected. I will need to buy 2 more HDMI cables though, 1 for the STB and 1 for for receiver. I will also be buying a digital optical cable for the PS3.

I will probably be buying a better receiver in the future but not anytime soon, I think we can live with our current setup for a while.

Thanks for the help!
